Cusco to Puno and Lake Titicaca: Bus, Train or Tourist Route

Cusco to Puno is about 390 km (242 mi) by road. A direct bus takes 6 to 7 hours, the daytime tourist bus with guided stops takes about 10, and the PeruRail Titicaca train takes about 10 and a half on set days. There is no direct flight. Take the tourist bus if you have the day, the night bus if you do not.

Short answer: Cusco to Puno is about 390 km (242 mi) by road, and you have three real choices. A direct bus does it in 6 to 7 hours, by day or overnight. The tourist bus on the Route of the Sun takes about 10 hours with four guided stops and lunch. The PeruRail Titicaca train takes about 10 and a half hours on set days of the week. There is no direct flight, so flying means Cusco to Lima to Juliaca and most of a day. Our pick: the tourist bus if you can give it the day, the night bus if you cannot.

Where Puno sits, and why the road is high

Puno is the Peruvian port on Lake Titicaca, southeast of Cusco on the altiplano, the high plateau between the two main ranges of the Andes. The road and the railway run side by side up the Vilcanota valley, cross the La Raya pass at 4,335 m (14,222 ft), and drop onto the plain past Juliaca to the lake. Puno itself sits at about 3,830 m (12,560 ft), higher than Cusco at 3,400 m (11,150 ft), which is the detail people miss when they plan the lake as a rest after the mountains. The lake surface is at 3,812 m (12,507 ft).

Because the pass is the highest point, every option on this page crosses it. By bus you barely notice. On the tourist bus and the train you get out, breathe thin cold air for ten minutes and photograph the snow peaks before moving on. Since our agency is based in Cusco, we make this trip in both directions all year, and the table below is what we tell our own guests.

The four ways compared

Read the table first and come back for the detail on whichever row fits your calendar. Times are door to door between the Cusco bus terminal or station and Puno, and all of them stretch when there is roadwork or a strike, so never book an onward flight from Juliaca for the same evening.

Tourist bus: the Route of the Sun stops

The Route of the Sun (Ruta del Sol) is a full-day bus with a guide that turns the drive into a sightseeing day. It leaves Cusco in the morning and reaches Puno in the late afternoon, about 10 hours later, with four stops and a buffet lunch. The buses have a bathroom, heating and oxygen on board, and a few companies run it on the same pattern. On our 9-day and 10-day Lima, Cusco and Puno packages this is the way we move guests to the lake, with the seats, the entrance fees and the lunch booked ahead.

The stops, in order

  1. Andahuaylillas. About 40 minutes from Cusco. The church of San Pedro Apóstol, a plain adobe front hiding a painted interior that guides call the Sistine Chapel of the Andes. No photos inside.
  2. Raqchi. The Temple of Wiracocha, a wall of adobe on a stone base more than 90 m (295 ft) long, with round stone granaries behind it. The biggest Inca building most people have never heard of.
  3. Lunch near Sicuani. A buffet in the Marangani or Sicuani area, with soup, trout, chicken, quinoa dishes and coca tea.
  4. La Raya pass. 4,335 m (14,222 ft), ten minutes out of the bus for the view of the Chimboya peaks and a row of alpaca-wool stalls.
  5. Pukara. The small lithic museum of a culture that predates Tiwanaku, with carved monoliths, on the plain an hour and a half before Puno.

Book this if you have a full day and like to see the country you cross. Skip it if the extra three hours matter more than the stops, if you get car sick on long days, or if you have already seen Andahuaylillas on our South Valley tour from Cusco.

The direct bus, by day or overnight

The direct bus is the cheapest and fastest way by road: 6 to 7 hours without stops, on the same highway. Several national bus companies run it from the Cusco terminal in the morning and again at night, with reclining seats on the better services. The night bus leaves Cusco around 10 p.m. and reaches Puno around 5 a.m., which is exactly what our 5-day Cusco to Lake Titicaca package does on the night after Machu Picchu.

The overnight run saves a hotel night and a full day, and it costs you a night of broken sleep right before a boat day on the lake. That trade is worth it for travelers with few days and good sleep on buses. If you are over 60 or a light sleeper, take the day bus and stay a night in Puno before the islands. Keep a fleece and a scarf in the cabin, because the bus crosses the pass at the coldest hour of the night.

The PeruRail Titicaca train

The PeruRail Titicaca is a day train with large windows, an open-air observation car and lunch served at your seat, running between Wanchaq station in Cusco and Puno on set days. The usual timetable is a departure from Cusco in the early morning, between 7:10 and 7:50 a.m. depending on the day, and arrival in Puno around 5:40 to 6:20 p.m., about 10 and a half hours, with a stop at La Raya. In the other direction the train leaves Puno at 7:50 a.m. and reaches Cusco at 6:20 p.m. It runs three days a week in each direction, so it has to fit your dates rather than the other way around.

Last checked: on August 8, 2026, PeruRail announced that rockfalls near Km 284 of the Juliaca to Cusco line had suspended trains on that section, and that the Titicaca service runs as a combined bus and train operation until the line is safe: bus between Cusco and Mollebamba (Km 280), train between Mollebamba and Puno. The notice had no end date. Check perurail.com for the current timetable before you book.

Take the train if the ride is the point and you have the right day. The landscape is the same as the bus, but you see it from a bar car with music rather than a reclined seat, and the meal is good. The train costs several times the tourist bus and gives you no stops at the church or the temple, so it is a choice about comfort, not about sights.

The Belmond Andean Explorer

The Andean Explorer is a sleeper train operated by Belmond, with cabins, a dining car and itineraries of one or two nights that link Cusco, Puno and Arequipa. It is a hotel on rails and priced like one. If you are considering it, book it directly on belmond.com and build the rest of the trip around its departure days, since they are fixed and few.

Flying: Cusco to Juliaca via Lima

There is no direct flight between Cusco and Juliaca, the airport for Puno. Flying means Cusco to Lima, about 1 hour 20 minutes, a connection, and Lima to Juliaca, then 45 minutes to an hour by road from the airport to Puno. Door to door that is most of a day, usually longer than the direct bus, at several times the price. The exception is when you are leaving Peru from the lake anyway: our packages that end in Puno finish with a transfer to Juliaca for the flight to Lima, which is the right way to go home.

Arriving in Puno at altitude

You arrive higher than you left. Puno is about 430 m (1,400 ft) above Cusco, and Taquile's village is higher still at about 3,950 m (12,960 ft). The US CDC puts unacclimatized travelers at risk once they sleep above 8,000 ft (2,450 m), and advises raising the sleeping altitude by no more than 500 m (1,600 ft) a day above 3,000 m (9,850 ft). Cusco to Puno keeps inside that limit, which is why the lake belongs after Cusco in a Peru itinerary and never before it. If you fly in from sea level, do Puno last, not first.

On arrival, walk slowly up from the terminal, drink more water than you want, skip the pisco sour on the first night and take the islands on your second day rather than the morning after the night bus. The lake sun is stronger than the city sun, so pack the hat and sunscreen for the boat. Our Cusco altitude guide covers symptoms and medication for the whole highland leg.

Puno to Cusco: the same options in reverse

Everything above works backward. The tourist bus leaves Puno in the morning and reaches Cusco in the late afternoon with the same five stops in reverse order, the direct bus runs by day and by night, and the train leaves Puno at 7:50 a.m. on its three days. The difference is altitude: going from Puno to Cusco you descend, so the second direction is the easier one on the body. Travelers who start in La Paz or Puno and finish at Machu Picchu are taking the gentler road.

How we get you to the lake

The shortest way to put Lake Titicaca into a Cusco trip is our Cusco to Lake Titicaca in 5 days package: Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, the night bus to Puno, then a lakeshore ceremony at Llachón, a night with a family on Amantaní and the Uros on the way back, from US$917 per person. The 9-day and 10-day Peru itineraries use the daytime tourist bus instead. Every trip that touches the lake is listed on the Lake Titicaca and Puno destination page, and Lake Titicaca facts explains what you are crossing the pass to see. Once you are in town, things to do in Puno fills the afternoon before the boat.

Questions people ask

Is it better to take the bus or the train from Cusco to Puno?

The bus, for most people. The tourist bus takes about 10 hours and stops at Andahuaylillas, Raqchi, La Raya and Pukara with lunch, so you see more than from the train for a fraction of the fare. The PeruRail Titicaca train is a lovely ride with an observation car, but it runs three days a week, stops only at La Raya, and costs several times more.

How long is the ride from Cusco to Puno?

About 390 km (242 mi) by road. A direct bus takes 6 to 7 hours, the tourist bus with four stops takes about 10, and the PeruRail Titicaca train takes about 10 and a half. Add an hour for roadwork or a strike before you book anything onward for the same evening.

Which stops does the Route of the Sun include?

Five, in this order from Cusco: the painted church of Andahuaylillas, the Temple of Wiracocha at Raqchi, a buffet lunch near Sicuani, the La Raya pass at 4,335 m (14,222 ft) with its view of the peaks, and the lithic museum of Pukara on the plain before Puno. Each stop is guided, and the bus reaches Puno in the late afternoon.

Is there a direct flight from Cusco to Puno?

No. Puno has no airport, and the nearest one, Juliaca, has no direct flights from Cusco. You would fly Cusco to Lima, connect, fly Lima to Juliaca and drive 45 minutes to an hour to Puno, which takes most of a day. Fly only when you are ending the trip at the lake and heading home through Lima.

Is the night bus from Cusco to Puno safe?

The national bus companies that run the overnight service use full-size coaches with reclining seats, and we use the night bus on our 5-day Cusco to Lake Titicaca package. Keep your passport and valuables on you, not in the hold, wear warm layers for the pass, and book the better seat class. If you sleep badly on buses, take the day bus and a night in Puno instead.

Is Puno higher than Cusco?

Yes. Puno sits at about 3,830 m (12,560 ft), roughly 430 m (1,400 ft) above Cusco at 3,400 m (11,150 ft), and the La Raya pass between them reaches 4,335 m (14,222 ft). That is within the CDC's advice of no more than 500 m of sleeping-altitude gain a day above 3,000 m, so Cusco to Puno is the right order. Do not go to the lake straight from sea level.

How do I get from Lima to Puno?

Fly Lima to Juliaca and drive 45 minutes to an hour to Puno. The bus from Lima is a long haul of more than a day, so almost nobody does it in one go. The better plan for a first trip is Lima to Cusco by air, a few days in Cusco and Machu Picchu, then the tourist bus or the night bus to Puno, and the flight home from Juliaca.
