The trip in one paragraph

This is the day hike for strong walkers who are well acclimatized and want a full day on foot in high mountains, not a quick viewpoint. If you have done Humantay or Rainbow Mountain and felt fine, you are ready. If you are in your first three days in Cusco, choose the Humantay Lake day trek instead.

Seven lakes under a 20,000 ft peak

The loop starts in Pacchanta, a herding community at about 13,780 ft (4,200 m) on the flank of Ausangate, the snow peak most Peruvian sources list at 20,945 ft (6,384 m). The path links seven lakes, each a different color: Azulcocha, Otorongo Macho, Otorongo Hembra, Pucacocha, Alqacocha, Q'omercocha and Patacocha. The highest, Patacocha, sits at about 15,940 ft (4,860 m).

Why it is harder than Rainbow Mountain

Vinicunca is higher at the top, but the walk there is short. Here you spend most of the day above 15,000 ft, with several climbs between lakes. You finish back in Pacchanta for lunch, with the option of a soak in the hot springs at your own cost. It is the quietest and most varied day hike we sell, and it asks the most of your legs.

Seven glacial lakes in one loopTurquoise, green, deep blue and red-tinted lakes, from Azulcocha at 4,610 m to Patacocha at 4,860 m.
Ausangate up closeThe glaciers of Ausangate hang right above the trail for most of the day, much closer than from Vinicunca.
Alpaca countryHerds of alpacas and llamas graze between the lakes, tended by families from Pacchanta.
Optional hot springsThe Pacchanta hot springs are next to the lunch stop. Entry is paid on the spot.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

How high are the 7 lakes of Ausangate?

Between 15,120 ft and 15,940 ft. By our route data, Azulcocha sits at 4,610 m, the Otorongo lakes at 4,620 m, Pucacocha at 4,680 m, Q'omercocha at 4,666 m, Alqacocha at 4,750 m and Patacocha, the highest, at 4,860 m. The village of Pacchanta, where you start, is at about 4,200 m.

Is Ausangate 7 Lakes harder than Rainbow Mountain?

Yes. Rainbow Mountain reaches a higher point, 16,522 ft, but the walk is a short climb and back. The Ausangate loop keeps you above 15,000 ft for most of the day, with several climbs between lakes. Do Rainbow Mountain or Humantay first, and book this only if you felt good on those.

Is the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike the same as the Ausangate trek?

No. The Ausangate trek is a multi-day camping route around the whole mountain, with passes above 16,000 ft. This day hike covers only the seven lakes near Pacchanta and returns to Cusco the same evening. It is a good test before you commit to the longer trek.

Are the hot springs included?

No. The pools sit beside the restaurant where you eat lunch, and you pay the entry on the spot if you want to go in. Pack a swimsuit and a small towel in your daypack. After a cold day at 15,000 ft, a soak before the drive back feels very good.

What happens if I cannot keep the group pace?

The guide sets a pace for the group and has a turnaround rule. If someone struggles with the altitude, the guide decides whether to shorten the loop. Be honest about headaches or dizziness. Turning back early is always the right call at this height.
