Peru in 10 Days: Lima, Nazca, Machu Picchu and the Andes

The trip in one paragraph

This is our 10-day Peru itinerary for first-timers who want the coast, Machu Picchu and two high hikes without stacking them. It is the 9-day trip with one easy day in the South Valley between Rainbow Mountain and Humantay. Book it if you are fit enough to hike but would rather enjoy day 9 than survive it. If you only want one hike, the 8-day tour is the shorter choice.

How the ten days divide

Three days on the coast for Lima, Paracas, Huacachina and the Nazca Lines. One day for Cusco, one for the Sacred Valley and the train, one for Machu Picchu. Then Rainbow Mountain on day 7, the South Valley on day 8 (Tipón, Pikillacta and the painted church of Andahuaylillas, all below 11,000 ft), Humantay on day 9, and the airport on day 10.

Why the rest day is in the middle

Rainbow Mountain at 16,522 ft leaves most people tired and short of sleep. A day at lower sites with a late 8:30 pickup lets you recover before the 4 a.m. start for Humantay. You spend five nights in Cusco in total, which also leaves evenings for the city itself. Our guide to a 10 day Peru itinerary explains the other ways to split ten days.

An easy day between hikesTipón, Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas on day 8, with a late pickup.
Rainbow Mountain and HumantayThe two classic Cusco hikes, 16,522 ft and 13,780 ft, two days apart.
Machu Picchu by trainNight in Aguas Calientes, guided Circuit 2 visit the next morning.
Nazca and BallestasDesert figures from the air and sea lions from the boat.

Choose your comfort level

Hotels are the only difference between tiers, 9 nights in all: Essential (3-star) from US$1,720, Comfort Plus (4-star premium) US$2,100, Signature (5-star) US$3,020. Per person in a double room, flights not included. A single supplement applies to solo travelers.

Pick your arrival date

Pick the day you land in Lima. The trip ends on day 10 at Cusco airport.

Send the free quote form with your arrival date and passport details. We confirm Machu Picchu tickets, trains, the Nazca flight and hotels. For June to August, book 30 to 45 days ahead.

Day by day

Open a day to see the hours, the altitude and where you sleep. Times are the ones our guides actually keep.

Day1

Lima airport, Miraflores, Historic Center of Lima

Night in Lima, near sea level

Hotel in Lima No meals included City tour about 4 hours
Your flight time
Pickup at Jorge Chávez airport

Our driver meets you outside customs with a sign and takes you to the hotel. Traffic from the airport to Miraflores runs 45 minutes to well over an hour, so do not plan anything tight.

14:00
Modern Lima: Miraflores and the cliffs

The afternoon tour starts on the clifftop parks of Miraflores, Parque del Amor and the Larcomar walkway, with the Pacific below. The sky is gray for most of the year, and that is normal for Lima.

Afternoon
Colonial center and the San Francisco catacombs

Then into the Historic Center (UNESCO, 1988): Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, the Government Palace from outside, and the bone-lined catacombs under the San Francisco convent. Back at the hotel in the early evening.

Day2

Lima, Paracas, Ballestas Islands, Ica, Huacachina

Night in Nazca, below 2,000 ft

Hotel in Nazca Boxed breakfast Pickup 04:40 to 05:00 Boat to the Ballestas
04:40
Pickup in Lima

Pickup between 04:40 and 05:00 with a boxed breakfast for the road. Paracas is about three and a half hours south.

Morning
Boat to the Ballestas Islands

The boat passes the Candelabra geoglyph cut into the sand, then circles the islands: sea lions on the rocks, Humboldt penguins, and so many cormorants and boobies that you smell the guano before you see them. Nobody lands on the islands. Sit on the left going out for the Candelabra.

Midday
Pisco tasting at an Ica bodega

A stop at a family winery near Ica to see how pisco is distilled, with a tasting.

Afternoon
Huacachina dunes

Dune buggy ride and sandboarding in the dunes around the Huacachina lagoon. The buggies drive hard over the crests, so hold on and keep your camera strapped. A proper board for experienced boarders costs extra. We drive on to Nazca on the Panamericana and check in late. The Nazca flight is tomorrow morning.

Day3

Nazca airfield, Nazca Lines flight, bus to Lima

Night in Lima, near sea level

Hotel in Lima Breakfast at the hotel Flight over the lines About 9 hours by bus
09:00
Flight over the Nazca Lines

Transfer to the Nazca airfield between 09:00 and 10:00 for the overflight of the lines (UNESCO, 1994): the hummingbird, the monkey, the spider, the astronaut on the hillside. The agency times the flight at about 45 minutes. The small plane banks hard left and right so both sides see each figure. Skip breakfast or eat light, and take motion sickness tablets an hour before.

14:00
Bus back to Lima

Regular coach from Nazca at 14:00, arriving in Lima around 23:00, with a transfer to your hotel. It is a long seat, so bring snacks and a sweater for the air conditioning.

Day4

Lima to Cusco flight, Qorikancha, Sacsayhuamán

Night in Cusco, 11,150 ft (3,400 m)

Hotel in Cusco Flight not included City tour from 13:00 Up to about 12,470 ft
Morning
Flight to Cusco

Transfer to Lima airport for a morning flight to Cusco, about 1 hour 20 minutes. You land at 11,150 ft (3,400 m). Walk slowly, drink water and coca tea, and eat a light lunch.

13:00
Cusco city tour

Qorikancha, the Inca sun temple with a Dominican convent built over its walls. Then the van climbs to Sacsayhuamán, whose zigzag walls use stones heavier than a loaded truck, and on to Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. Back near the Plaza de Armas around 18:30.

Day5

Cusco, Chinchero, Moray, Maras, Ollantaytambo, Aguas Calientes

Night in Aguas Calientes, 6,690 ft (2,040 m)

Hotel in Aguas Calientes Buffet lunch Expedition train Up to 12,340 ft at Chinchero
06:20
Pickup in Cusco

Pickup between 06:20 and 06:50. Pack a small overnight bag for Aguas Calientes and leave the big suitcase at the Cusco hotel, because the train has a luggage limit.

Morning
Chinchero, Moray and Maras

Chinchero, at 12,340 ft (3,762 m), has a colonial church on Inca walls and a weaving cooperative that shows natural dyes. Moray is a set of circular terraces sunk into the ground. At Maras, thousands of salt ponds step down the hillside, white against red earth.

Midday
Buffet lunch in the valley

Lunch at a buffet restaurant in the valley, with trout, quinoa and Andean potatoes.

Afternoon
Ollantaytambo and the train

A guided visit to the Ollantaytambo terraces, then the PeruRail Expedition train to Aguas Calientes along the Urubamba river, about 1 hour 40 minutes. The air gets warm and damp as you drop into cloud forest.

Day6

Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, Cusco

Night in Cusco, 11,150 ft (3,400 m)

Hotel in Cusco Machu Picchu Circuit 2 Breakfast at the hotel About 2.5 hours on foot
Early morning
Bus up to Machu Picchu

Consettur bus up the switchbacks, about 30 minutes. Your entry time is printed on the ticket, under your passport name.

Morning
Guided visit, Circuit 2

About 2 hours 30 minutes with a licensed guide on Circuit 2, the route with the classic upper view and the main temples. Circuits are one way with no re-entry, so use the restroom at the gate.

Afternoon
Vistadome train and transfer

Lunch on your own in Aguas Calientes, then the PeruRail Vistadome back to Ollantaytambo, with roof windows and a snack. A van drives you up to Cusco, about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Day7

The climb to Vinicunca

The trail climbs past alpaca herds to the viewpoint at 16,522 ft (5,036 m), with Ausangate's glaciers to the east. Most people stop every twenty steps on the last slope. Horses for most of the way are paid in cash to the community.

Tipón water gardens

Pickup between 08:30 and 09:00. Tipón is a set of Inca terraces where stone channels still carry spring water from fountain to fountain.

Late morning
Pikillacta and Huacarpay

Pikillacta is a Wari city older than the Incas, a grid of rough stone walls. Then past the Huacarpay wetland, with reeds and water birds.

Afternoon
Andahuaylillas church

The church of San Pedro Apóstol in Andahuaylillas has painted walls and ceilings that locals call the Sistine Chapel of the Americas. Back in Cusco mid afternoon.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

Is 10 days enough for Peru?

Ten days covers Lima, the Nazca Lines, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and two high hikes at a pace most people enjoy. It does not include Lake Titicaca. Adding the lake properly takes about three more days, which is why our lake trips run 13 days and longer.

Does this 10-day tour include Lake Titicaca?

No. The old page name mentions Puno, but the itinerary stays around Cusco after Machu Picchu. If the lake matters to you, the 15-day complete Peru trip and the Peru and Bolivia packages include a boat day to the Uros and Taquile.

Can I swap a hike for something easier?

Yes, if you ask when you book. Common swaps are the Maras and Moray tour or a free day in Cusco. We adjust the price if the replacement costs less.

Are flights included?

No. You book the international flights and the Lima to Cusco flight. We tell you which morning flight works with the 13:00 city tour on day 4.

What does the 10-day tour cost?

From US$1,720 per person in a double room with 3-star hotels, US$2,100 with 4-star premium hotels (Comfort Plus) and US$3,020 with 5-star hotels (Signature). Only the hotels change between tiers.
