The trip in one paragraph

Most visitors to Puno spend their lake day on the boats to the Uros and Taquile. This tour goes the other way, by road along the southern shore, where Aymara villages, pre-Inca burial towers and colonial churches sit between the water and the hills. Book it if you have a spare day in Puno and have already done the islands. If you are crossing into Bolivia, the Puno to Copacabana route covers the same shore and ends on the other side of the border.

What the day covers

Chucuito and its Inka Uyo courtyard, the stone burial towers of Molloco, the raised fields called waru waru, the carved rock of Amaru Muru and the town of Juli, with its four colonial churches and lunch. You are back in Puno around 5 p.m. The road stays between 12,500 and 12,660 ft, so the walking is short but the air is thin.

Amaru Muru without the myths

Amaru Muru is a red sandstone outcrop near Juli with a tall, smooth recess cut into the rock face and a small niche at its base, like a door that does not open. Local Aymara stories tie it to Inca-era priests and to the lake. Some visitors arrive calling it a stargate. Our guides tell the legends as legends and show you the carving as it is.

Waru waru raised fieldsAncient raised beds and water channels that still protect crops from frost.
Amaru MuruA door-shaped carving in a red rock face, and the Aymara stories told about it.
Juli and its churchesA lakeside town with four colonial churches, where lunch is served.

Inka Uyo in Chucuito

Chucuito was a colonial treasury town. Beside its church, Inka Uyo is a walled courtyard of carved stones that local tradition ties to fertility rites. The guide explains the story and the debate around it.

Chullpas de Molloco

Round and square burial towers of the Lupaqa people, who ruled this shore before the Incas, on a hill above the water.

Late morning
Waru waru fields

Raised planting beds separated by water channels. The water stores the day's heat and keeps the frost off potatoes and quinoa at night, a technique far older than the Incas.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

What is Amaru Muru?

Amaru Muru is a carved rock face near Juli, on the Peruvian shore of Lake Titicaca, with a tall door-shaped recess and a small niche at its base. Aymara legends link it to Inca priests and the lake. Claims that it is a portal or stargate are modern internet stories. The carving and the views are worth the stop on their own.

Does this tour visit the Uros floating islands?

No. It is a road tour along the southern shore. The Uros and Taquile are reached by boat from the port of Puno on a separate day. If you have only one day in Puno, choose the islands, and take this tour if you have a second day.

How long is the Aymara route tour?

About nine hours: pickup at 08:00 at your hotel in Puno and back around 17:00, with lunch in Juli. The farthest point is Juli, about 50 miles southeast of Puno.

Is the tour hard?

No hiking is involved. Each stop has a short walk on uneven ground. The challenge is altitude, around 12,600 ft all day, so walk slowly and drink water.

How much is the Aymara route from Puno?

US$127 per person, tour only. It includes transport, the guide, entrance fees and lunch in Juli. Your Puno hotel is not included.
