The trip in one paragraph

The shortest package in this category that includes hotels and airport transfers. You land in Cusco, rest, and see the city and the Inca sites above it in the afternoon. Day two is the long one: train down the valley, a guided visit to Machu Picchu, and back to the same Cusco hotel at night. Day three you fly out. It suits a long weekend or a stopover inside a bigger Peru trip.

Who a 3-day plan works for

Travelers who already know they cope with altitude, or who are coming from Lake Titicaca or another high city, handle this plan well. If it is your first time above 10,000 ft, give yourself one more day: the Machu Picchu and Cusco 4-day package adds the Sacred Valley and a night in Aguas Calientes, which breaks up the train day.

Day by day in short

Day 1: airport pickup, coca tea, city tour from 1:00 p.m. through Qorikancha, Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. Day 2: van to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes, bus up, about two hours on Circuit 2 with a guide, then back to Cusco by evening. Day 3: breakfast and transfer to the airport. You sleep both nights in the same Cusco hotel, so you unpack once.

Cusco city tourThe sun temple of Qorikancha, the giant stones of Sacsayhuamán and three smaller Inca sites, with a guide on day 1.
Train day to Machu PicchuExpedition down the Urubamba valley, Vistadome back, with the bus and entrance ticket included.
Circuit 2 with a guideAbout two hours inside, past the upper viewpoint and the main temples.
One hotel, two nightsTwo nights under one roof, category set by your tier, so you never repack mid-trip.

Choose your comfort level

Same guides, trains and tickets in every tier. The tier sets only your Cusco hotel for both nights: Essential (3-star) from US$727, Comfort Plus (premium 4-star) US$736, Signature (5-star) US$936. Prices are per person in a double room. Solo travelers pay a single-room supplement, included in the quote.

Pick your arrival date

Pick the day you land in Cusco. The trip ends on the morning of day 3.

Send the free quote form with your arrival date and passport details. We check tickets, trains and hotels and reply with what is available. June to August sells out first: book 30 to 45 days ahead.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

Is 3 days enough for Cusco and Machu Picchu?

It is enough to see the Cusco highlights and Machu Picchu, not the Sacred Valley. Day 2 is long because you go and return the same day. If you can add one day, the 4-day package adds Chinchero, Moray and Maras plus a night by the river, and it is the version we recommend.

Do I need a day to acclimatize first?

Day 1 is your acclimatization day: nothing until 1:00 p.m., then a city tour with short walks. Machu Picchu is about 3,200 ft (970 m) lower than Cusco, so day 2 is easier on the lungs than people expect. Coming straight from sea level, rest more than you think you need.

Do I sleep in Aguas Calientes?

No. Both nights are in the same Cusco hotel, and Machu Picchu is a round trip on day 2. For a night at the foot of the mountain, choose the 4-day package or the 2-day train tour.

Which hotels are in each tier?

Essential uses a central 3-star hotel, Comfort Plus a premium 4-star, Signature a 5-star. The rest of the trip is identical. We send the hotel name with your confirmation.

Is the Machu Picchu ticket included?

Yes, Circuit 2, bought in your passport name, plus the bus. Read how Machu Picchu tickets work for the details on slots and passport rules.

Which meals are included?

Two breakfasts at the Cusco hotel. Lunches and dinners are on your own, and Cusco has good restaurants at every price within walking distance of the center.

How far ahead should I book?

For June to August, 30 to 45 days ahead. Other months, two to three weeks. Add two to three months if you want Huayna Picchu.

Can I add Lake Titicaca or Rainbow Mountain?

Yes. Rainbow Mountain fits as one extra day from Cusco. Lake Titicaca needs two more days, by road to Puno and a boat day on the lake. Tell us in the quote form and we send a combined plan.
