Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Day Hike
The trip in one paragraph
Palccoyo is for travelers who want striped mountains without the hardest climb of the Cusco day trips. It suits people in their third or fourth day at altitude, older travelers who walk well but slowly, and anyone who saw the crowds on Vinicunca photos and winced. If you are fit, acclimatized and want the famous single ridge, book the Vinicunca day tour instead.
Three striped hills on one ridge
Palccoyo is a farming community in the Checacupe district, south of Cusco. Its hills carry the same red, green and ochre bands as Vinicunca, spread over three rises instead of one. The road climbs most of the height for you, so the walk is a ridge path of about 45 minutes each way with small ups and downs. The high point sits around 16,080 ft (4,900 m), so you still breathe hard, and you still need a jacket.
What you trade away
The colors are a little softer than on Vinicunca and there is no single postcard ridge. In exchange you walk less, you share the trail with a fraction of the people, and you reach the stone forest, a field of tall eroded rock pillars with views of the Vilcanota range. Unsure which one fits you? Read Palccoyo vs Vinicunca.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Palccoyo or Vinicunca: which is easier?
Palccoyo, by a clear margin. The walk is about 45 minutes each way on a fairly level ridge, against close to two hours of steady climbing on Vinicunca. Both sit around 16,000 ft, so you feel the altitude on either. Pick Palccoyo if you are short on acclimatization days or prefer an easy walk.
How far is Palccoyo from Cusco?
A long drive south through the Vilcanota valley to the Checacupe district, which is why pickup is at 4:00 a.m. You spend most of the morning in the van and are back in Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Bring a pillow and a podcast.
Is Palccoyo less crowded than Rainbow Mountain?
Yes. Vinicunca draws the large tour buses, while Palccoyo sees a fraction of that traffic. On most mornings you share the ridge with a few small groups. That makes it the better choice if your goal is photos without a line of people on the ridge.
Are the colors on Palccoyo as strong as on Vinicunca?
Slightly softer, and spread across three hills instead of one dramatic ridge. In bright sun the reds and greens read clearly on camera. In cloud both mountains look muted, so the season matters more than the choice of mountain.
Is the Palccoyo hike OK for kids or older travelers?
It is the gentlest of our striped mountain hikes, so it suits active older travelers well. For children, the problem is the altitude, not the walk. Ask your pediatrician before taking a young child above 16,000 ft, and plan at least two nights in Cusco first.
