Machu Picchu Day Trip from Cusco by Train
The trip in one paragraph
This is the trip for people with exactly one free day in Cusco and no night to spare. You leave the hotel around 4:00 a.m., ride the train down the Urubamba canyon, walk Machu Picchu for about two and a half hours with a licensed guide, and get back to Cusco around 10:00 p.m. If you can give it one more night, book the 2-day version with a night in Aguas Calientes instead. It is calmer and you reach the gate rested.
Who the day trip suits and who should sleep in Aguas Calientes
It works for fit travelers who have already spent a night or two in Cusco and want the citadel without paying for another hotel. It is a poor fit for anyone fresh off a flight, for small kids and for people who hate early alarms. Roughly six of the eighteen hours are spent in a van or on a train.
The timeline from 4 a.m. pickup to late return
Two hours by road to Ollantaytambo, about an hour and forty minutes by train to Aguas Calientes, then the Consettur bus up the switchbacks to the gate at 7,970 ft (2,430 m). Your entry time is printed on the ticket, and everything else is built around it.
Which circuit we book
We book Circuit 2, the route with the classic upper viewpoint and the main temples. Read how the circuits work if you want to compare. Circuit 2 is the one we pick for anyone who will see Machu Picchu only once.
Price
One price, per person, shared service: US$317. There are no hotel tiers because there is no hotel night. The price changes only if you ask for something outside the standard day, such as an upgraded train class or a guide just for your group, and we quote that through the free quote form.
Pick your tour date
Pick the day you want to visit Machu Picchu. Tours run every day the site and the railway are open.
Send the free quote form with your date and passport details. We check tickets and train seats and reply with what is available. For June to August, book 30 to 45 days ahead.

Day1
Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Cusco
No hotel night, high point Cusco 11,150 ft (3,400 m), Machu Picchu 7,970 ft (2,430 m)
Pack the night before. Breakfast at your hotel will not be open yet, so carry a snack and water. The van climbs out of Cusco in the dark and drops into the Sacred Valley as the sky turns gray.
The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The train leaves Ollantaytambo station at 9,160 ft (2,792 m) and runs roughly 1 hour 40 minutes down the canyon. Sit on the left side going down for the river views.
Your guide meets you at the Aguas Calientes station and walks you to the Consettur bus line. The ride up takes about 25 minutes. Use the restrooms at the gate, because there are none inside the circuit.
About 2.5 hours, which is the official maximum stay for the Circuit 2 routes. The guide starts at the upper terraces for the postcard view, then goes down past the quarry, the sun temple and the Sacred Plaza. Circuits run one way, so photos you skip are photos you lose.
Bus back down, then lunch on your own near the river. Budget about an hour and keep an eye on the train time your guide gives you.
The return train climbs the same canyon. Many people sleep. The van waits at Ollantaytambo for the drive back to Cusco.
The exact time depends on the return train we could book. Plan a light dinner and nothing early the next morning.
Where you go
Cusco to Machu Picchu is about 70 miles (112 km) in a straight line, but the road and the rails turn it into four hours each way.
Route: Cusco · Ollantaytambo · Aguas Calientes · Machu Picchu.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Can you do Machu Picchu as a day trip from Cusco?
Yes. This trip does it in about 18 hours: pickup around 4:00 a.m., train from Ollantaytambo, a 2.5-hour guided visit on Circuit 2 and drop-off in Cusco around 10:00 p.m. It is long but not hard. The walking is moderate, and you sit for most of the travel time.
How much is a Machu Picchu day tour from Cusco?
US$317 per person. That covers hotel pickup, the van, the train both ways, the Consettur bus both ways, the Circuit 2 entrance ticket and a licensed guide. Meals and tips are extra. Solo travelers and groups get their exact price through the free quote form.
Is a one-day trip too rushed?
For the citadel itself, no: 2.5 hours is the official limit on Circuit 2 anyway. The rush is the travel around it. If you can add a night, the 2-day tour gives you an earlier entry and a calmer morning.
What time does the train leave Ollantaytambo?
Early morning, usually between about 6:00 and 7:30 a.m., depending on the seats available for your date. The exact departure and return times are on your confirmation. See the train options from Cusco for how the timetable works.
Which circuit does the ticket include?
Circuit 2, the route with the upper viewpoint for the classic photo and the main temples on the way down. If Circuit 2 is sold out for your date, we tell you before you pay and offer the closest option.
Can I add Huayna Picchu to the day trip?
No. The mountain routes need several extra hours and an early slot that the train schedule from Cusco does not leave room for. Sleep one night in Aguas Calientes and it becomes possible.
Do I need to be fit for this tour?
You need to be comfortable walking 2.5 hours on uneven stone steps with some climbing at the start. Machu Picchu is lower than Cusco, so altitude is rarely the problem. The long day is the harder part.
Do I need my passport?
Yes, the original. The ticket is issued in your passport name and number, and staff check it at the gate. Send us your passport details when you book so the ticket matches exactly.
What if the train is cancelled?
Rail service sometimes stops for landslides or strikes. We follow the operator's notice, rebook trains and tickets where the rules allow, and tell you your options the same day. Extra costs from these events are not included, which is why we recommend travel insurance.
