The trip in one paragraph

Book this day if you have one spare day in Lima and want the Pacific wildlife and the desert dunes without a night away. It is long: pickup before 5 a.m. and back in Lima between 10 and 11 p.m., with about eight hours of it on the road. If you have two days, the Paracas, Huacachina and Nazca 2-day tour adds the Nazca Lines and spreads the driving out.

Morning on the water

The Ballestas Islands sit off the Paracas peninsula, about 160 mi (260 km) south of Lima. The boat circles them for around two hours and never lands, because the islands are a protected guano reserve run by SERNANP. You pass close to sea lions on the rocks, Humboldt penguins, boobies and pelicans, and on the way out you see the Candelabro, a giant figure cut into the sand of the peninsula. Boats go out in the morning because the wind picks up after midday.

Afternoon in the dunes

After a tasting at a pisco winery near Ica, the van drives to Huacachina, a small lagoon ringed by sand dunes a few miles outside the city. The buggy is a roller coaster on sand. The driver climbs to the crest of a dune, hands out boards and you slide down, most people lying on their stomach, which takes no skill. The last run is timed for the late-afternoon light.

Who should skip the trip

If your Peru trip is a week built around Cusco, spend the day there instead. And if you have back or neck problems, skip the buggy. The ride is rough by design.

Ballestas Islands wildlifeSea lions, Humboldt penguins, boobies and pelicans on guano islands you see from the boat, without landing.
The CandelabroA geoglyph about 590 ft (180 m) tall on the north face of the peninsula, seen from the water.
Dune buggy at HuacachinaA fast ride over the dunes around the lagoon, with stops on the crests to sandboard down.
Pisco tasting at an Ica wineryA winery visit to see how Peru's grape brandy is made, with a tasting of pisco and local wine.

One price, US$207 per person, shared service, with transport, the Ballestas boat, the buggy and sandboard, the winery and a box breakfast. There is no hotel tier because you sleep in your own Lima hotel. Groups who want their own departure get a quote through the free quote form.

Good to know

A very long outingAbout eight hours of driving and nine of activities. If your flight to Cusco is the next morning, book a later one.
Boat cancellationsThe port authority closes the Paracas pier when the sea is rough. If the Ballestas boat does not sail, the rest of the day runs as planned. Ask us about the refund for the boat part when you book.
Sun and sandThere is no shade on the dunes. Bring wrap-around sunglasses, a buff or scarf for your face and more sunscreen than you think.
What to bringClosed shoes, a warm layer for the boat, a zip bag for your phone because fine sand ruins charging ports, and cash in soles.
Two climatesMorning on the coast is cool and grey for much of the year, around 64 F (18 C). Afternoon in the Ica desert is hot, often above 86 F (30 C) from December to March.
The buggy rideFast and bumpy, with seat belts. Not advised if you are pregnant or have back or neck problems. You can stay at the lagoon instead.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

Can you do Paracas and Huacachina in one day from Lima?

Yes, and this tour does exactly that, but the day is about 17 hours long. Pickup is at 4:40 to 5:00 a.m. and drop-off is late in the evening. Around eight hours are on the road. If you can give it two days, the version with a night on the coast is easier.

Is sandboarding included?

Yes. The dune buggy ride and sandboarding at Huacachina are part of the tour. The driver stops on the crests and hands out boards, and most people slide down lying on their stomach. No experience is needed. Board wax and lessons are not part of it, and you do not need either.

Do you land on the Ballestas Islands?

No. The islands are a protected reserve managed by SERNANP and landing is not allowed for visitors. The boat circles them closely for about two hours, close enough to hear the sea lions and smell the guano.

Will I see penguins at Ballestas?

Most days, yes. Humboldt penguins live on the islands all year, usually in small groups on the lower rocks. Sea lions, boobies and pelicans are easier to spot. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and the guide points out what is there that morning.

Are the Nazca Lines part of this tour?

No. Nazca is about two and a half more hours south of Ica, which does not fit in one day from Lima with the Ballestas boat. Book one of the 2-day tours to add the Nazca Lines flight.

Is this day trip worth the drive?

Worth it if you have a free day in Lima and want wildlife and desert in one go. Skip it on a short trip built around Cusco and Machu Picchu, where eight hours of road cost you more than they give.
