Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) Day Tour from Cusco
The trip in one paragraph
Book this tour if you have already slept two nights in Cusco and can walk uphill for close to two hours at your own pace. If you landed yesterday, or you want the colors with far less climbing, take the Palccoyo day hike instead.
What the day is really about
Vinicunca sits at 16,522 ft (5,036 m), the altitude in Peru's official tourism inventory. The trail from the Llaqto trailhead covers about 1.9 miles (3 km) and gains roughly 1,330 ft (400 m). On paper that is a short walk. At that height, with about half the oxygen you breathe at home, it feels like climbing stairs with a backpack full of bricks. The stripes are mineral layers in the rock, red, ochre, green and white, and they look sharpest on a dry, sunny morning.
Who should skip Vinicunca
Anyone with heart or lung conditions, anyone in their first 48 hours at altitude, and families with small children. Talk to your doctor before the trip if you have any doubt. For the full picture read our guide to Rainbow Mountain altitude and weather.
The day hour by hour
Pickup between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. Breakfast in Cusipata around 7:00. You start walking near 8:00 and most people reach the viewpoint between 9:30 and 10:00. Lunch is back in Cusipata, and you are in central Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.
Adding the Red Valley
The Red Valley viewpoint is not part of the price. Your guide offers it on the day if the group is on schedule and the sky is clear.

One price for everyone: US$137 per person, shared service, with transport, entrance, guide, breakfast and lunch. There is no hotel tier because you sleep in your own Cusco hotel. Solo travelers and groups who want their own departure get a quote through the free quote form.

Day1
Cusco, Cusipata, Llaqto trailhead, Vinicunca, Cusco
Back in Cusco the same day, high point 16,522 ft (5,036 m)
Pickup runs between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. from hotels in central Cusco. Sleep in your layers and carry a pillow for the van: the first stretch is dark and quiet.
After about two and a half hours on paved road south through Urcos you stop for a hot buffet breakfast. Eat light, drink coca tea or water, and use the bathroom here.
About an hour on a dirt road climbing to the Llaqto sector of the Chillihuani community, 15,190 ft (4,630 m). The air is already thin when you step out of the van.
About 1.9 miles (3 km) and 1 hour 45 minutes on foot, gaining roughly 1,330 ft. The first half is a gentle valley. The last 20 minutes are steep switchbacks, and most people stop every few steps there. Horses are available for the stretch up (see the good to know section).
About 40 minutes at the top for photos and the view to Ausangate. Wind at the ridge is strong and cold even in sunshine, so put your jacket on before you sit down.
About an hour back down the same trail. Use the poles on the loose sections.
A buffet of Peruvian dishes back in Cusipata, then the drive north to Cusco.
Drop-off near the Plaza de Armas between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.
Where you go
The route runs south of Cusco along the Vilcanota River to Cusipata, then climbs a dirt road to the Llaqto trailhead below Vinicunca.
Route: Cusco · Cusipata · Vinicunca.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
How far is Rainbow Mountain from Cusco?
About three and a half hours each way by road, part on pavement and the last hour on a dirt road to the trailhead. That is why pickup is at 4:00 a.m. and you are back between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Plan nothing else for that day, and nothing strenuous for the next morning.
How high is Rainbow Mountain: 5,036 or 5,200 meters?
We use 16,522 ft (5,036 m), the altitude in the official tourism inventory of MINCETUR, Peru's tourism ministry. You will see 5,200 m on many sites. That figure belongs to the upper ridge above the viewpoint, which the same record puts above 5,200 m. The standard trail ends at the viewpoint.
How hard is the hike at that altitude?
The distance is easy, about 1.9 miles up. The altitude is the hard part. At 16,000 ft most people walk slowly and stop often, and that is normal. If you have spent two nights in Cusco and you walk regularly at home, you will make it. If you feel a severe headache or confusion, turn back.
Can I rent a horse?
Yes. Local families rent horses for about US$24 (S/80) per stretch, paid in cash on the day. A horse saves your legs on the climb, though you still feel the altitude. Tell your guide at breakfast so the horse is waiting at the trailhead.
What time is pickup?
The van starts collecting travelers at 4:00 a.m. and finishes by 4:30. We confirm the exact time the evening before. Have your layers on and your daypack ready at the hotel door, because the van stops for a couple of minutes per hotel and the schedule is tight.
Is Rainbow Mountain worth it in the rainy season?
It is a gamble. In the wet months the stripes often disappear in cloud by mid-morning and snow can cover them after a storm. If your dates fall in that window, Humantay Lake is the safer high-altitude day trip. Read Vinicunca or Palccoyo to compare the striped mountains.
