Lake Titicaca is the lake this agency is named after, and these are the tours that reach it: two day routes along the Aymara shore from Puno at US$127, a Uros and Taquile boat day we are adding to the catalog, and eight multi-day trips from Cusco or Lima that spend two or three days on the lake, from US$917. The lake sits at 3,812 m (12,507 ft) on the border of Peru and Bolivia, and every trip here includes the boat, the guide, the entrance fees to the islands and, on multi-day packages, the hotel in Puno.
If you are planning a first trip to Peru, do not try to see the lake on a day trip from Cusco. Puno is about 390 km (242 mi) and eight to ten hours by road from Cusco, so the lake needs two nights. The 5-day Cusco to Lake Titicaca package is the shortest way to add it to Machu Picchu. The 10-day Lima, Cusco and Lake Titicaca package is the full first trip. If you are already in Puno, the Aymara Route day tours take you to places the island boats skip.
The table lists everything that reaches the lake, grouped by day tours and multi-day trips, with the days on the lake, the islands visited, the highest point and the price. Multi-day prices are the Essential tier, per person in a double room.

The Aymara Route (US$127) drives the southern shore to Chucuito, the Molloco burial towers, the raised fields the Aymara call waru waru and the carved rock face at Amaru Muru, a flat stone doorway cut into a cliff that local stories attach legends to. The Puno to Copacabana version (US$127) continues to the Kasani border and ends in Copacabana on the Bolivian side, which saves a day for travelers heading to La Paz. The Uros and Taquile day (price to be confirmed) is the classic boat day: 30 minutes to the reed islands, about three hours to Taquile, lunch with a family, back by late afternoon.
Four packages come from the Peru itineraries and ceremonies groups and four from the Peru and Bolivia routes. The 5-day Cusco to Lake Titicaca trip takes the night bus from Machu Picchu to Puno and spends days four and five on the lake with an Aymara offering ceremony. The 9-day and 10-day Lima, Cusco and Puno packages use the daytime tourist bus with stops at Andahuaylillas, Raqchi and the La Raya pass at 4,335 m (14,222 ft), then give the lake a full boat day. The Peru and Bolivia trips cross the lake to Copacabana and Isla del Sol on the way to La Paz.
The lake is higher than Cusco, which surprises people who expect water to be low. Puno sits at about 3,830 m (12,560 ft) and Taquile's village at about 3,950 m (12,960 ft), reached by a stone stairway from the dock that takes 30 to 40 minutes at a slow pace. That stairway is the only real effort on any lake day. Every multi-day package puts Puno after Cusco for that reason, and we recommend a minimum of three nights above 3,000 m (9,800 ft) before the Taquile climb.
Not included: dinners, the ride on a reed boat at the Uros (a small cash payment to the family that owns it), tips and the flight from Juliaca if you fly out.
Boats leave the Puno pier around 7:30 a.m. The Uros islands are 30 minutes out, inside the bay of Puno, and a family shows you how the totora reed is cut, stacked and replaced from underneath as the island rots. From there it is two and a half to three hours across open water to Taquile, where the men knit and the women weave and the island runs its own tourism cooperative. You climb to the village, eat quinoa soup and trout, walk across to the other dock and are back in Puno by 5 p.m. The sun at 3,812 m is fierce on the water, so cover up even when it feels cool.
May to September: clear skies, the deepest blue water, nights near 25 F (minus 4 C) in Puno. November to March: afternoon storms that pass quickly, greener shores, warmer nights. The lake is open all year and the boats run daily. Our pick is April or October, when the water is calm in the morning and the crowds from the Cusco buses have thinned.
Start with where Lake Titicaca is and why it matters, then the Uros floating islands explained and how to get from Cusco to Lake Titicaca by bus, train or plane. The destination page for Lake Titicaca and Puno lists every package that touches the lake.
Both. Lake Titicaca lies on the border in the Andes, about 390 km (242 mi) southeast of Cusco, with Puno on the Peruvian shore and Copacabana on the Bolivian one. Roughly the larger western part is Peruvian. Our tours start from Puno, and the Peru and Bolivia routes cross to the Bolivian side at Kasani.
The surface is at 3,812 m (12,507 ft), which makes it higher than Cusco at 3,400 m (11,150 ft). Puno, on the shore, sits at about 3,830 m (12,560 ft). It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world. Plan it after Cusco, not before, and expect the sun on the water to be stronger than anything you felt in the city.
No. Cusco to Puno is eight to ten hours by road or about one hour by air to Juliaca plus 45 minutes to Puno, and the boats leave at 7:30 a.m. You need two nights in Puno for one full lake day. The 5-day Cusco to Lake Titicaca package is the shortest version we sell, and the tourist bus with guided stops turns the drive into a sightseeing day.
The Uros are floating islands built from totora reed in the bay of Puno, 30 minutes from the pier, home to families who maintain them by adding fresh reed on top. Taquile is a natural stone island three hours out, with terraced fields, a village at the top of a stairway and a weaving tradition on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2005. Most boat days visit both.
Yes, and our opinion is that it is the better second half of a Peru trip than Rainbow Mountain. Machu Picchu is a site you look at. The lake is people you spend a day with: a Uros family on their island, a Taquile family at lunch, the Aymara communities on the southern shore. It costs two extra nights and a bus day, and nobody we have taken there has regretted it.
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat first, because the light at 3,812 m reflects off the water. Then a windproof layer for the crossing, a bottle of water, cash in soles for the reed boat ride and crafts, and your passport. The boats have a covered cabin and a roof deck. Taquile's stairway is the only climb, so wear shoes you can walk uphill in.
