Machu Picchu by Train, 2 Days
The trip in one paragraph
This is the Machu Picchu trip we recommend to most people who are already in Cusco and have two days. You ride the panoramic Vistadome train down the valley on day one, sleep in Aguas Calientes at the foot of the mountain, and walk into the citadel the next morning with a licensed guide and fresh legs. It suits couples, families and anyone over 60 who wants the site without an 18-hour day. If you only have one day, the Machu Picchu day trip from Cusco does it in one push.
Why the overnight beats the day trip
Day-trippers reach the gate after four hours of van and train. You get there after breakfast and the short bus climb. That difference shows in the photos and in your knees. You also get an afternoon in Aguas Calientes, which is warm, green and loud with the river.
Day 1 afternoon and evening in Aguas Calientes
The train arrives around midday. Lunch and dinner are included, and the hot springs that gave the town its name are a 10-minute walk uphill from the main square.
Day 2 early entry and return
Breakfast, the bus up, about two hours inside Circuit 2 with your guide, lunch on your own, then the train to Ollantaytambo and the van to Cusco. You are back at your hotel in the evening.
Choose your comfort level
Same trains, same guide, same tickets in every tier. The tier sets only your hotel in Aguas Calientes: Essential (3-star) from US$597, Comfort Plus (premium 4-star) US$620, Signature (5-star) US$751. Prices are per person in a double room. A solo traveler pays a single-room supplement, which we include in your quote.
Pick your arrival date
Pick the day you leave Cusco. The trip runs every day the railway and the site are open.
Send the free quote form with your date and passport details. We check tickets, trains and hotels and reply with what is available. June to August sells out first: book 30 to 45 days ahead.
Day by day
Open a day to see the hours, the altitude and where you sleep. Times are the ones our guides actually keep.
Day1
Cusco, Poroy, Aguas Calientes
Night in Aguas Calientes at 6,690 ft (2,040 m), high point Cusco 11,150 ft (3,400 m)
The driver takes you to Poroy station on the edge of Cusco. Leave your big suitcase at your Cusco hotel and travel with one small bag.
About four hours on the rails. The first hour crosses farmland and switchbacks down to the valley, then the line follows the Urubamba River past Ollantaytambo into the canyon. Snacks and drinks are served on board.
Your guide meets you on the platform. Aguas Calientes has no cars, so you walk to the hotel, five to ten minutes on flat streets for most hotels.
Included. Afterward the afternoon is yours: the hot springs, the market by the station, or a nap with the window open to the river.
Dinner is included. Your guide confirms your bus and entry time for the morning and checks that your passport is in your bag.
Day2
Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, Cusco
Back in Cusco for the night (hotel not included), high point 7,970 ft (2,430 m) at Machu Picchu
Hotels in Aguas Calientes start breakfast early for Machu Picchu guests. Leave your bag at reception, take a daypack up.
About 25 minutes up the switchbacks. The line at the bus stop moves fast, but it gets long after 7 a.m. Your guide times it to your entry slot.
About two hours. You start high, at the terraces above the city, and work down past the Temple of the Sun, the royal rooms and the main plaza. With a ticket for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, booked ahead, you climb after the tour.
Bus back down, collect your bag, lunch near the river. This meal is not included.
Expedition class back up the valley, about 1 hour 40 minutes.
The drive takes about two hours. The night in Cusco is not part of the package.
Where you go
Out by Poroy and the full Vistadome line, back by Ollantaytambo and the road, so you see the valley from both sides.
Route: Cusco · Poroy station · Aguas Calientes · Machu Picchu · Ollantaytambo.

"All the tours I did (Machu, Humantay Lake, Rainbow Mountain, Sacred Valley) were spectacular!!! From picking me up at the hotel (always punctual and attentive, notifying about everything!) to the guides I had who were also excellent."
"I came to this agency by recommendation and, after traveling with them on two occasions, I can say that it was an excellent decision. I must highlight the professionalism of the guides, who made every tour very interesting and safe."
Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Is 2 days enough for Machu Picchu?
Yes, for Machu Picchu itself. Two days lets you arrive rested, see Circuit 2 with a guide for about two hours and still have time for one of the mountain hikes if you book it. If you also want Cusco and the Sacred Valley, look at the 3- or 4-day packages in this category.
Can I see Machu Picchu at sunrise if I sleep in Aguas Calientes?
Sleeping in town is the only realistic way to be at the gate for the first entry slots. Whether you see the sun come up depends on two things: the slot available on your ticket and the clouds, which often sit on the mountain until mid-morning. We ask for the earliest slot left when we book.
Which train goes on day 1, Vistadome or Expedition?
Day 1 is the Vistadome from Poroy at 7:25 a.m., with roof windows and about four hours of scenery. Day 2 comes back on the Expedition to Ollantaytambo, followed by the van to Cusco. Upgrades are quoted through the free quote form.
What hotel do I stay in for each tier?
Essential uses a 3-star hotel, Comfort Plus a premium 4-star, Signature a 5-star. Everything else is identical. We send the hotel name with your confirmation, because we book whichever hotel of that category has rooms on your date.
Can I start the 2-day tour in Ollantaytambo?
If you are staying in the Sacred Valley, ask for it in the quote form. We can usually board you at Ollantaytambo instead of Poroy and finish there on day 2. The train class and price are adjusted in the quote.
Is the Machu Picchu ticket included, and which circuit?
Yes, Circuit 2, the route with the upper viewpoint and the main temples. We buy it under your passport name. Our guide on how Machu Picchu tickets work explains the circuits, time slots and passport rules.
Can I add Huayna Picchu?
Yes, on day 2, for US$75 per person, booked in advance. It is a steep climb on narrow stone steps of about two hours up and down. Book it when you book the tour, because the daily spaces go first.
What do I do with my big suitcase?
Leave it at your Cusco hotel. Most hotels store bags for free. PeruRail's allowance is small, so pack an overnight bag and nothing more.
How far ahead should I book?
For June to August, 30 to 45 days ahead. The rest of the year, two to three weeks is usually enough. Add Huayna Picchu and you should book two to three months out.
