Machu Picchu & Cusco in 5 Days, with Rainbow Mountain
The trip in one paragraph
This is our 4-day Machu Picchu and Cusco itinerary with one big mountain day added at the end. You see Cusco, cross the Sacred Valley, sleep by the river in Aguas Calientes, walk Machu Picchu with a guide, and then, on day four, climb to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint at 16,520 ft (5,036 m). It suits active travelers who want the citadel and one high Andean landscape in under a week. If a 4:00 a.m. start and a steep climb above 15,000 ft sounds like too much, book the 4-day Machu Picchu and Cusco package and stop there.
Why Rainbow Mountain goes last
Order is everything here. By day four you have spent three days between 6,690 and 12,340 ft, including a night low in Aguas Calientes, and your body has had time to adapt. People who climb Rainbow Mountain on their second day in Cusco are the ones you see sitting on the trail with a headache. We put it last on purpose.
The five days in short
Day 1: airport pickup and a city tour from 1:00 p.m. Day 2: Chinchero, Moray, the Maras salt pans, lunch in Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and the train. Day 3: Machu Picchu on Circuit 2, then back to Cusco. Day 4: Rainbow Mountain, pickup at 4:00 a.m., back by late afternoon. Day 5: transfer to the airport. Between November and March, clouds hide the colors on many mornings. That is the trade-off of the wet season.
Choose your comfort level
Same guides, trains and tickets in every tier. The tier sets the hotels, 3 nights in Cusco and 1 in Aguas Calientes: Essential (3-star) from US$914, Comfort (4-star) US$935, Signature (5-star) US$1,405. Prices are per person in a double room. Solo travelers pay a single-room supplement, included in the quote.
Pick your arrival date
Pick the day you land in Cusco. The trip ends on the morning of day 5.
Send the free quote form with your arrival date and passport details. We check tickets, trains and hotels and reply with what is available. June to August sells out first: book 30 to 45 days ahead.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Is Rainbow Mountain hard after Machu Picchu?
It is the hardest day of the trip, but doing it after Machu Picchu makes it easier. By day four you have had three days to adjust. The climb is 1.5 to 2 hours uphill from about 15,100 ft to 16,520 ft. Most people stop every few minutes on the final slope. Horses are available for most of the way.
What altitude is Rainbow Mountain?
The viewpoint on Vinicunca sits at about 16,520 ft (5,036 m). The trailhead is around 15,100 ft (4,600 m). Some ridges nearby reach about 17,000 ft (5,200 m), which explains why both numbers circulate.
Can I ride a horse at Rainbow Mountain?
Yes. Families from the local community rent horses for most of the way up, paid in cash on the spot. The last stretch to the viewpoint is on foot for everyone.
When is the best month for Rainbow Mountain?
From May to September the sky is usually clear and the colors show. From November to March, clouds and snow often cover the stripes. The trip runs all year, but we recommend the dry season if the mountain matters most to you.
Is the Machu Picchu ticket included?
Yes, Circuit 2, in your passport name, plus the bus up and down. Our guide on how Machu Picchu tickets work explains the time slots.
Which hotels are in each tier?
Essential uses 3-star hotels, Comfort 4-star, Signature 5-star, in Cusco and in Aguas Calientes. Everything else is identical. Hotel names come with your confirmation.
Can I skip Rainbow Mountain if I do not feel well?
Yes. Tell your guide the night before and rest in Cusco instead. The ticket and transport for that day are not refunded, but nobody should climb to 16,520 ft feeling sick.
How far ahead should I book?
For June to August, 30 to 45 days ahead. Other months, two to three weeks is usually enough.
