The trip in one paragraph

This is the lean, one-day way to Huchuy Qosqo, for hikers who are already used to the altitude and bring their own poles, snacks and water. You start high on the grassland north of Cusco, walk past small lakes and over old stone paths, and reach the Inca site on its shelf above the Sacred Valley around midday. Then you drop to the valley floor at Lamay and ride back to Cusco. Mostly downhill, but long.

Which Huchuy Qosqo trip to choose

We run three. This one is the basic day hike: guide, site entrance, box lunch and transport. If you would rather have poles, snacks, water and oxygen handed to you on the same route, take the fully supported Huchuy Qosqo hike from Cusco. If you want to sleep beside the ruins and see sunrise there, book the Huchuy Qosqo trek 2 days, which climbs up from Lamay instead.

What the day feels like

The first hours are open and quiet, at about 13,780 ft (4,200 m), with llamas, a few farmhouses and the snow peaks of the Urubamba range ahead. After 4 to 5 hours you look down on the terraces of Huchuy Qosqo, and the Sacred Valley appears far below them. The last part is the steep one: about 2,300 ft (710 m) down to Lamay, which your knees will remember the next morning. You are back in Cusco around 5:00 p.m.

Lakes and grassland above CuscoThe hike starts at Huayllacocha on the high plateau, with small lakes, llamas and wide views of the snow peaks.

Good to know

Do it on day 3 or laterThe hike starts at about 13,780 ft (4,200 m). The CDC treats 8,000 ft (2,500 m) and up as high elevation. Give yourself two nights in Cusco first.
FitnessModerate. Six to seven hours on foot, mostly downhill. Strong knees matter more than lungs on the last stretch.
What to carry2 liters of water, snacks, sunscreen, sun hat, rain shell, warm layer for the morning, poles and cash for the village.
Two temperaturesCold and windy at Huayllacocha in the morning, warm in the valley by mid-afternoon. Dress in layers.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

How long is the one-day hike?

A full day. You walk 6 to 7 hours in total: 4 to 5 hours from Huayllacocha to Huchuy Qosqo, the guided visit and lunch, then the steep descent to Lamay. With the drives you are out from morning until about 5:00 p.m.

How hard is the Huchuy Qosqo day hike?

Moderate. It starts high, at about 13,780 ft (4,200 m), and is mostly downhill. The hard part is the end: about 2,300 ft (710 m) of steep descent to Lamay. Acclimatize for two nights in Cusco and bring poles.

What is the difference between this hike and the supported Huchuy Qosqo hike?

Same route, different service. This trek includes guide, entrance, box lunch and transport, and you bring your own poles, snacks and water. The supported day hike adds those, plus oxygen, for travelers new to hiking at altitude.

Can I sleep at Huchuy Qosqo?

Not on this hike. If you want a night beside the ruins with sunset and sunrise, book the 2-day trek, which climbs up from Lamay and camps near the site.

Can I stay in the Sacred Valley after the hike?

Yes. The hike ends in Lamay, on the valley floor. Tell us in the quote form and we arrange the drop-off at a Sacred Valley hotel instead of Cusco, if it fits the group's route.
