Pallay Punchu One Day Trek
The trip in one paragraph
Pallay Punchu is for travelers who have already seen Rainbow Mountain photos everywhere and want a striped mountain that looks different. It suits people with three or more days in Cusco who do not mind a very early start and a long day in the van. If you want the shortest drive, pick the Palccoyo day hike. If you want the famous ridge, pick Vinicunca.
The poncho mountain of Layo
The name is Quechua for a decorated poncho, and the ridge earns it: thin bands of color run up sharp, tilted rock fins, like the stripes on a woven poncho. It sits in the Layo district of the Canas province, above Lake Langui Layo, at about 15,420 ft (4,700 m) according to the Layo district council. The walk to the viewpoint takes 45 minutes to an hour each way.
What you trade for the quiet
The drive is the longest of our striped mountain trips: pickup at 3:00 a.m. and back between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. You get the big blue lake, the jagged fins and very few people. For a side-by-side comparison read Vinicunca, Palccoyo or Pallay Punchu.
Price
One price for everyone: US$147 per person, shared service, with transport, guide, breakfast and lunch. There is no hotel tier because you sleep in your own Cusco hotel. Solo travelers and groups who want their own departure get a quote through the free quote form.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
How far is Pallay Punchu from Cusco?
Far. The ridge is south of Sicuani, close to the border with Puno, which is why pickup is between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. You are back in Cusco between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. Most of the day is driving, and the walk itself takes about two hours round trip.
Pallay Punchu or Vinicunca?
Pallay Punchu if you want few people and a shape no one else has on their feed. Vinicunca for the classic postcard and a shorter drive. The Pallay Punchu walk is shorter but the day is longer. Both are high, so both need two nights in Cusco first.
How hard is the Pallay Punchu hike?
Moderate. The Layo district council gives 45 minutes to an hour to the viewpoint. The path is short but the last part is steep and the altitude is around 15,420 ft (4,700 m). Walk slowly, drink water and stop when you need to.
What does Pallay Punchu mean?
In Quechua it means a decorated or woven poncho. The thin colored bands on the rock fins look like the patterns woven into Andean ponchos, and the local communities named the mountain after them.
Is Lake Langui Layo part of the visit?
Yes. The hike starts beside the lake, so you see it before and after the walk. There is no boat trip or swimming included. Plan a few minutes for photos at the shore when the light is low and the water is still.
