Puno to Copacabana by the Aymara Route, Border Included
The trip in one paragraph
The plain bus from Puno to Copacabana takes about three hours and stops at nothing. This route spends the whole day on the same road and stops at the places worth seeing on the Peruvian shore, then takes you across the border and drops you in Copacabana for the night. Book it if you are heading into Bolivia and want the crossing handled. If you are staying in Puno, the Aymara route day tour covers the same stops and brings you back.
The route
Chucuito and its Inka Uyo courtyard, the carved rock of Amaru Muru and lunch in Juli, then past Pomata to the Kasani border post. You walk through Peruvian exit and Bolivian entry, and the last few miles run down to Copacabana, a lakeside town with a white 17th-century basilica and the boats to Isla del Sol.
Entering Bolivia
US citizens no longer need a visa for a tourist visit to Bolivia, as of December 1, 2025, per the U.S. Embassy in La Paz. You need a passport valid six months, your Copacabana hotel address and the yellow fever card that the CDC lists as an entry requirement. Read Bolivia visa rules for US citizens before you go.
Price
One price, US$127 per person, tour only. Transport, guide, entrance fees, lunch and border help are included. Hotels in Puno and Copacabana are not.

Day1
Puno, Chucuito, Amaru Muru, Juli, Kasani, Copacabana
Night in Copacabana, 12,602 ft (3,841 m)
Pickup at your Puno hotel with all your bags, since you will not come back. The van heads southeast along the lake.
Chucuito's Inka Uyo is a walled courtyard of carved stones that local tradition links to fertility rites. A short stop with the guide.
Amaru Muru is a red sandstone outcrop near Juli with a tall, smooth recess cut into the rock face and a small niche at its base, like a door that does not open. Local Aymara stories tie it to Inca-era priests and to the lake. Some visitors arrive calling it a stargate. Our guides tell the legends as legends and show you the carving as it is.
Lunch at a local restaurant in Juli and a look at its colonial churches.
Past Pomata to the Kasani border post. Peruvian exit stamp first, a short walk, then the Bolivian entry stamp. Your guide stays with you through both offices.
Down to Copacabana on the Bolivian shore and drop-off at your hotel. Walk up Cerro Calvario for sunset over the lake if you still have legs.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Do US citizens need a visa for Bolivia?
No, not for a tourist visit. Bolivia dropped the visa requirement for US citizens on December 1, 2025, per the U.S. Embassy in La Paz (checked October 2026). You need a passport valid at least six months, the address of your first hotel, and the paper yellow fever card, which the CDC lists as an entry requirement. Peru needs no visa either.
How long does it take from Puno to Copacabana?
By direct bus about three hours plus the border. On this tour the whole day, from 08:00 in Puno to late afternoon in Copacabana, because of the stops in Chucuito, Amaru Muru and Juli.
Which border crossing is used?
Kasani, on the road to Copacabana. It is the crossing closest to the lake shore. The other main crossing, Desaguadero, is used for the direct road to La Paz.
What is Amaru Muru?
A carved rock face near Juli with a tall door-shaped recess. Aymara legends link it to Inca priests and the lake. It is not a proven portal of any kind, and our guides present the stories as stories.
Can I go on to Isla del Sol or La Paz afterward?
Yes. Boats to Isla del Sol leave from Copacabana, and buses run to La Paz in about four hours, crossing the Tiquina strait. We can quote either as an add-on, or look at our Peru and Bolivia packages that include La Paz.
How much is the Puno to Copacabana tour?
US$127 per person, tour only, including transport, guide, entrance fees, lunch and help at the border. Hotels are not included.
