ATV Tour to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines
The trip in one paragraph
This tour is for travelers who want Moray and Maras with some adrenaline, and who would rather ride across farm country than sit in a van all day. It suits couples and friends, since two people can share one ATV. If you prefer a full valley day by van with Chinchero and Ollantaytambo added, book the Chinchero, Moray and Maras day tour.
How the ride works
A van takes you about 1 hour 20 minutes from Cusco to the ATV base at Cruz Pata, on the plateau above the Sacred Valley. An instructor gives a 15-minute lesson on the controls, then the group rides dirt tracks between potato and quinoa fields to Moray, the Inca site of round stone terraces. After the visit you ride back to the base. The van then takes you down to the Maras salt pans, thousands of white pools fed by a salty spring, before the drive back to Cusco.
Pick your slot
There are two departures, 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. We prefer the morning: the light on the salt pans is softer, the tracks are less dusty and you have the afternoon free. The plateau sits around 11,480 ft (3,500 m), lower than many Cusco day trips, so it works on your second day. For more on both sites read Maras salt mines and Moray explained.
Price
One price for everyone: US$167 per person, shared service, with transport, ATV, instructor, guide and both site entries. There is no hotel tier because you sleep in your own Cusco hotel. Groups who want their own departure get a quote through the free quote form.
Pick your tour date
Two departures every day, at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Pick your date and slot and send the free quote form. We confirm the seats within the day.
ATV numbers are limited per slot. In June and July send your request a week or two ahead.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Do I need a driver's license to ride?
Our trip data does not list a license requirement, and the ride starts with a 15-minute lesson from the instructor. Rules on age and licenses are set by the ATV operator, so we confirm them in writing when we answer your quote. Bring your passport on the day.
Is there a passenger option?
Yes. One ATV can carry two people, one driving and one as a passenger. It is a good choice for couples, for parents with an older child, or for anyone who wants the ride without handling the controls.
Which slot is better, morning or afternoon?
Morning. The 7:00 a.m. departure has calmer air, less dust and softer light on the salt pans, and you are back in Cusco in the early afternoon. The 1:00 p.m. slot works if you arrive in Cusco that morning, though the plateau gets windy later in the day.
Are the Moray and Maras entries included?
Yes, both are included in the price, along with the ATV, helmet, instructor, guide and transport. Meals and the salt you buy at Maras are extra.
Is the ATV ride dangerous?
The tracks are flat to rolling dirt roads, ridden in line behind the instructor at a steady speed. The main risks are dust and keeping too close to the ATV in front. Follow the instructor's spacing, keep both hands on the bars and you will be fine.

- Cusco Altitude: How High It Is and How to AdjustCusco sits at about 3,399 m (11,152 ft), and the CDC treats flying straight in as a high-risk ascent. Expect a headache and short breath the first day. Sleep lower in the Sacred Valley first if you can, keep two days easy, skip alcohol, and ask your doctor about acetazolamide.
- Ollantaytambo: The Inca Town Where the Train LeavesOllantaytambo is a living Inca town at the western end of the Sacred Valley, 9,160 ft (2,792 m) up and about two hours from Cusco. It has a terraced fortress with an unfinished sun temple, streets laid out by the Incas and still lived in, and the station where most trains to Machu Picchu leave.
- Q'eswachaka: The Last Inca Rope Bridge, Rebuilt Every YearQ'eswachaka is the last Inca rope bridge still in use, a 92 ft (28 m) span of woven grass over the Apurímac River in Canas province, about 3.5 hours south of Cusco. Four Quechua communities rebuild it by hand every June in three days. UNESCO inscribed the renewal on its Intangible Heritage list in 2013.
