Humantay Lake Day Trek from Cusco
The trip in one paragraph
Humantay is the high day hike we recommend to most first-timers in Cusco. It is lower and shorter than Rainbow Mountain, it still works on cloudy days, and the lake looks like nothing else on the trip. Skip it only if you arrived in Cusco in the last 48 hours. If you would rather see striped mountains, compare it with the Rainbow Mountain day tour.
The lake and the climb
Humantay Lake sits at 13,780 ft (4,200 m) at the foot of the Humantay glacier, in the Mollepata district, per Peru's tourism inventory. The milky turquoise comes from glacial meltwater. The walk starts at Soraypampa, about 12,800 ft (3,900 m), and climbs roughly 1,000 ft in about 1 hour 40 minutes. The path is wide and steady for the first half, then turns into steep zigzags. Most people stop every 30 or 40 steps on that part, and nobody is racing.
How it fits your trip
The lake is part of the route of the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, so you get a taste of that trail in a single day. It also works as the warm-up hike before a multi-day trek. Plan it on your third day in Cusco or later, with a light dinner and an early night before the 4:00 a.m. pickup.

Day1
Cusco, Mollepata, Soraypampa, Humantay Lake, Cusco
Back in Cusco the same day, high point 13,780 ft (4,200 m)
Pickup between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. from hotels in central Cusco. The road heads west across the Anta plain.
Breakfast in the farming town of Mollepata. Eat something even if your stomach says no: you need the energy on the climb.
A narrow dirt road up to Soraypampa, about 12,800 ft (3,900 m), where vehicles stop and the walk begins.
About 1 hour 40 minutes uphill. Steady at first, then tight zigzags for the last stretch. Walk at a pace where you can still talk.
Time for photos and a rest by the water. Climb the low ridge on the left for the view over the whole lake. Keep your jacket on: the glacier makes the air cold.
About an hour down the same path. Go slowly on the loose gravel of the zigzags.
Lunch back in Mollepata, then the drive to Cusco.
Drop-off near the Plaza de Armas between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
How long is the hike to Humantay Lake?
About 1 hour 40 minutes uphill from Soraypampa and about an hour back down, plus time at the lake. The full day runs from a 4:00 a.m. pickup to a drop-off between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. in Cusco, with breakfast and lunch in Mollepata.
How high is Humantay Lake?
13,780 ft (4,200 m), per the official tourism inventory of MINCETUR, Peru's tourism ministry. The trailhead at Soraypampa is about 12,800 ft (3,900 m), so you climb around 1,000 ft. Cusco sits at about 11,150 ft (3,400 m), which is why two nights there first make the day easier.
Can you swim in Humantay Lake?
No, and we do not let our groups try. The water is glacier melt close to freezing, and local communities treat the lake as a sacred place. Enjoy it from the shore or from the ridge above it.
Is Humantay easier than Rainbow Mountain?
Yes. Humantay tops out about 2,700 ft lower than Vinicunca, at 13,780 ft against 16,522 ft. The climb is steeper in places but shorter, and the lower altitude makes it easier for most people. In the rainy season it is also the safer bet, since a lake reads well under gray skies.
Can I do Humantay on my first day in Cusco?
We advise against it. Cusco itself is at about 11,150 ft, and going to 13,780 ft the next morning raises the risk of altitude sickness. Do the city tour or the walking tour on day one and keep Humantay for day three or later.
