Machu Picchu & Humantay Lake 6 Days
The trip in one paragraph
The fullest Cusco trip in this category: the city, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and then the two high day hikes most people come to Cusco for, Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain. The order climbs gently. Humantay at 13,780 ft (4,200 m) comes on day four, Rainbow Mountain at 16,520 ft (5,036 m) on day five, after three days of adjusting. It suits fit travelers with a week who want both lakes and peaks. If two pre-dawn mountain days in a row sound like a lot, the 5-day plan with Rainbow Mountain drops Humantay.
Why the altitude order matters
Days one to three never go above 12,340 ft (3,762 m), and night two is low, in Aguas Calientes at 6,690 ft (2,040 m). By the time you climb to Humantay, your body has had three days to adapt. Rainbow Mountain, the highest point, comes last. People who reverse this order are the ones who turn around halfway up.
Which day is hardest
Day five. Rainbow Mountain starts at 4:00 a.m., the trail begins at about 15,100 ft (4,600 m) and the last slope to the viewpoint is steep. Humantay on day four is shorter but steeper than it looks: about 1.5 to 2 hours up a zigzag path from Soraypampa. Days four and five both run from about 4:00 a.m. to early evening, so plan nothing for those nights.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
How hard is the Humantay Lake hike?
Moderate to hard for most people. It is short, 1.5 to 2 hours up from Soraypampa at about 12,800 ft to the lake at 13,780 ft, but steep and at altitude. Coming after three days in the region, it is manageable at a slow pace. Horses cover part of the way.
Which day is hardest?
Day five, Rainbow Mountain. It starts at 4:00 a.m., the trail begins at about 15,100 ft and the viewpoint sits at 16,520 ft (5,036 m). Day four at Humantay is the warm-up for it.
Why do Humantay and Rainbow Mountain come after Machu Picchu?
Altitude. The first three days stay at or below 12,340 ft, with a night down in Aguas Calientes. That gives your body time to adjust before the two high days, which is how most people reach both viewpoints without turning back.
Is the Machu Picchu ticket included?
Yes, Circuit 2, in your passport name, plus the Consettur bus. Read how Machu Picchu tickets work for slots and passport rules.
Can I swap a mountain day for a rest day in Cusco?
Yes, if you tell us before we book. Ask in the quote form and we adjust the plan and the price. On the trip itself, you can skip a mountain day if you feel unwell, but that day's costs are not refunded.
What is the weather like at Humantay Lake?
Cold at the shore, often near freezing in the morning from May to September, with strong sun. From December to March, expect rain or snow and cloud over the glacier.
Which hotels are used?
3-star hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes, central in Cusco. For a higher category, ask in the quote form and we price the difference.
How far ahead should I book?
For June to August, 30 to 45 days ahead. Other months, two to three weeks is usually enough.

No road reaches Machu Picchu. The alternatives are treks or the Hidroeléctrica walk.
- Machu Picchu for Seniors: How to Visit Comfortably After 60Travelers in their 60s and 70s visit Machu Picchu every day. Go by train, sleep a night in Aguas Calientes, take the bus both ways and walk Circuit 2, route 2-A, about 2 hours 30 minutes on stone paths and stairs. Plan around Cusco's 3,399 m altitude, not the ruins, and see your doctor before you fly.
- Machu Picchu History and Facts, SourcedMachu Picchu is an Inca royal estate built for the emperor Pachacuti in the 1400s on a ridge at 7,970 ft (2,430 m). Radiocarbon dates put its use between about AD 1420 and 1530. It was left around the Spanish conquest, never found by the Spanish, shown to the world by Hiram Bingham in 1911 and listed by UNESCO in 1983.
