About peru and bolivia tours

Last reviewed October 2026.

Six multi-day Peru and Bolivia tours, 10 to 15 days from US$1,647, cross Lake Titicaca from Puno to Copacabana and continue to La Paz and the Uyuni salt flats, after Cusco and Machu Picchu on the Peruvian side. Two day routes from Puno at US$127 follow the Aymara shore to the border, for travelers already on the lake. Hotels, guides, tickets, the Machu Picchu train and the ground transport between the two countries are included. Flights are not.

Book the 10-day tour if Uyuni is the reason you are reading this: it is the shortest route that reaches the salt flat, and it ends at the Uyuni airport so you fly out from there. Book 12 days or more if you want the colored lagoons and the geysers south of the salt flat, which need two extra days in a 4x4. The 15-day version starts with the coast, Paracas and Huacachina, before the Andes.

Compare the routes

All eight packages in one table: days, where the route starts, what it reaches in Bolivia and the price per person in the Essential tier. The two Aymara day routes are at the bottom, since they are a different kind of trip.

By the days you have

Ten and eleven days: Lima or Cusco, Machu Picchu, Puno, the Uros islands, Copacabana, La Paz and one full day on the Salar de Uyuni. Twelve to fourteen days: the same plus Rainbow Mountain in Cusco and the three-day Uyuni circuit to Laguna Colorada and the Sol de Mañana geysers at about 4,900 m (16,076 ft). Fifteen days: the Peruvian coast first, then everything above. If you only have a week, cross the lake on the day route from Puno to Copacabana and leave Uyuni for another trip.

By effort and altitude

These are the highest trips we sell that involve no trekking. You sleep at 3,400 m (11,150 ft) in Cusco, 3,830 m (12,560 ft) in Puno, around 3,600 m (11,811 ft) in La Paz and 3,650 m (11,975 ft) at the salt flat, with the Uyuni circuit climbing to 4,900 m (16,076 ft) on the lagoons day. The order helps: by the time you reach Bolivia you have been above 3,000 m (9,800 ft) for a week. The long transfers are the real effort. Puno to La Paz is about eight hours by road including the border, and La Paz to Uyuni is an overnight bus or a short flight. Walking is light everywhere except Rainbow Mountain.

By budget

Essential tier, 3-star: US$1,817 for 10 days, US$1,647 for 11, US$2,047 for 12, US$3,247 for 13 and 14 days and US$3,057 for 15. The 11-day is cheaper than the 10-day because it uses buses where the 10-day uses a domestic flight segment, and the 13 and 14 day routes carry the full Uyuni circuit with its 4x4 and lodges. Signature, 5-star where it exists on the route, runs US$3,030 to US$5,870. On the salt flat the hotel difference is real: the Essential tier sleeps in a simple hostel and the upper tiers in a salt-block hotel.

Crossing the border at Lake Titicaca

The road from Puno follows the lake shore for about two and a half hours to the Kasani crossing. You leave Peru at the Migraciones post, walk about 200 m (650 ft) across the line and enter Bolivia on the other side. US passport holders do not need a visa for a tourist visit to Bolivia (as of October 2026): Bolivia dropped the requirement on December 1, 2025, per the U.S. Embassy in La Paz. Bring a passport valid for six months and the address of your hotel. The CDC lists proof of yellow fever vaccination as an entry requirement for Bolivia for travelers 1 year and older, so carry the paper yellow card. Our guide walks you through the post.

Uyuni seasons

The salt flat has two faces. From roughly January to March, rain leaves a thin layer of water on the salt and the surface turns into a mirror that doubles the sky. From April to December it is dry, white and cracked into hexagons, and you can drive all the way to Incahuasi island with its cactus forest. Both are worth the trip and they are different photographs. Nights on the Uyuni circuit drop to 5 F (minus 15 C) from June to August, so the sleeping bag the lodge provides is not optional.

What is included between the two countries

  • Hotels with breakfast in Lima, Cusco, Puno, Copacabana or La Paz and Uyuni, by tier.
  • Machu Picchu entrance on Circuit 2, round-trip train and Consettur bus.
  • Tourist bus or bus-boat from Cusco to Puno, Puno to Copacabana and on to La Paz, with a guide.
  • Boat to the Uros islands and Taquile, and to Isla del Sol where the itinerary names it.
  • 4x4 with driver on the Uyuni days, lodge nights and meals on the circuit.
  • Licensed guides in English in both countries.

Not included: flights (Lima to Cusco, and the Uyuni to La Paz or Lima flights on routes that end there), the Mi Teleférico cable car ticket in La Paz, dinners, insurance and tips.

Questions about peru and bolivia tours

How many days do you need for Peru and Bolivia?

Ten days is the minimum that reaches Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, La Paz and one day on the Uyuni salt flat, and it works because it ends at the Uyuni airport. Twelve days adds the lagoons and geysers south of the salt flat. Fifteen days adds the Peruvian coast. Anything under ten days means choosing between Machu Picchu and Uyuni.

Do US citizens need a visa for Bolivia?

No, not for a tourist visit (as of October 2026). Bolivia dropped the visa requirement for US citizens on December 1, 2025, per the U.S. Embassy in La Paz. You need a passport valid for six months and your hotel address. The CDC lists proof of yellow fever vaccination as an entry requirement for travelers 1 year and older, so carry the paper yellow card. Peru asks US citizens for no visa either.

What is the best season for Uyuni?

Decide which photograph you want first. January to March for the mirror, when rain leaves a film of water over the salt and the sky reflects at your feet. April to December for the dry white hexagons and the drive to Incahuasi island, which floods out in the wet months. Our own pick is late March or early April, when both can happen in the same week.

How do we cross the border, and is it safe?

By road with the guide, at the Kasani post about two and a half hours from Puno. You stamp out of Peru, walk across and stamp into Bolivia. The post is a quiet rural crossing used by tour buses every day. Keep your passport, your hotel address and your yellow fever card in your day pack, and plan for about an hour at the border.

Is La Paz included, and how high is the city?

Yes, every multi-day route spends at least one day in La Paz with the city tour and the Moon Valley. The city runs from about 3,200 m (10,500 ft) in the south to 4,100 m (13,450 ft) in El Alto, where the airport is. By then you have been at altitude for a week, so most travelers feel it less than they did in Cusco. The Mi Teleférico cable car ticket is paid on the spot.

Can I do Peru and Bolivia without the long bus rides?

Partly. Fly Lima to Cusco and Uyuni to La Paz, and we tell you which flights. Cusco to Puno and Puno to La Paz are by road because that is where the lake and the border are, and the tourist bus stops at Andahuaylillas, Raqchi and the La Raya pass on the way. If sitting for eight hours is a problem, we split the Puno to La Paz leg with a night in Copacabana.
