The trip in one paragraph

Waqrapukara is for travelers who like ruins more than viewpoints and want a hike with almost nobody else on it. It suits people with at least two days in Cusco who walk regularly at home. If you want an Inca site with less walking and a shorter drive, the Sacred Valley day tour is the easier day.

The horned fortress

Waqrapukara means horn fortress in Quechua. The Inca walls wrap around a rock outcrop that ends in two pointed spires, like the horns of a bull, on the edge of the Apurimac canyon in the province of Acomayo. Stone terraces, doorways and enclosures sit right under the horns, and the drop into the canyon on the far side is sheer. The site sits at about 14,110 ft (4,300 m) by our route data.

What the walk is like

You walk out and back on the same trail across open highland with herding hamlets and wide views. There are no crowds and no vendors, so carry everything you need. The van waits at the trailhead with a box lunch, and you are back in Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

The Apurimac canyon belowFrom the site you look straight down into the canyon of the Apurimac River.
An Inca site without crowdsOn most days your group has the ruins nearly to itself. No vendors, no lines.
Herding countryThe trail crosses high grassland used by alpaca and sheep herders from nearby communities.

Still have questions?

Everything we get asked about this package before people book.

Where is Waqrapukara?

In the province of Acomayo, south of Cusco, on the rim of the Apurimac River canyon. You reach it by road and then on foot, so it works as a day trip with a 4:00 a.m. pickup and a return to Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

How hard is the Waqrapukara hike?

Moderate. The trail is out and back over highland terrain with some steep sections, at around 14,110 ft. Fit walkers who have spent two nights in Cusco handle it well. Hiking boots and poles make the descent much easier on your knees.

What does Waqrapukara mean?

Horn fortress, from the Quechua words for horn and fortress. The name comes from the two pointed rock spires that rise above the Inca walls. Seen from the trail, the spires frame the walls like a crown.

Waqrapukara or Rainbow Mountain?

Waqrapukara if you want Inca ruins and solitude. Rainbow Mountain if you want the striped ridge and do not mind crowds. Waqrapukara is lower, around 14,110 ft against 16,522 ft, and the walk is longer but less steep at the end.

Is food available on the trail?

No. There are no shops at the site. Breakfast is served before the walk, and a box lunch waits at the van when you come back. Carry snacks and at least 1.5 liters of water for the hike.
