Lima and Machu Picchu in 6 Days
The trip in one paragraph
This is the shortest trip we sell that starts in Lima and still reaches Machu Picchu without a 3 a.m. day trip. Book it if you have one week of vacation and want Lima, a day on the coast and Machu Picchu done properly. If you can stay longer, the 8-day version adds Nazca and Rainbow Mountain.
The shape of the trip
Two nights in Lima at sea level, two in Cusco and one in Aguas Calientes, the town below the ruins. Day 2 is a long coastal day to the Ballestas Islands and the Huacachina dunes. On day 3 you fly to Cusco, and on day 4 the Sacred Valley tour ends at the train station, so you sleep at 6,690 ft (2,040 m) the night after landing at 11,150 ft. That drop is the smartest part of this route for your body.
What this pace costs you
Cusco gets one afternoon and one final morning. You see the main Inca sites on the city tour, but not the markets, museums or San Blas at leisure. People who arrive tired from an overnight flight also feel day 2, with a pickup before 5 a.m. If that sounds like too much, ask us to swap the coast day for a free day in Lima at the same price structure, and we will quote it.
Why Machu Picchu cannot be a day trip from Lima
Machu Picchu is about 300 miles (490 km) from Lima in a straight line, across the Andes, with no road or rail link that fits a day. You need a flight to Cusco, then a road and a train. Read getting from Lima to Machu Picchu for every option.
Choose your comfort level
Same guides, trains, tickets and tours in every tier. The tier sets the hotels for all 5 nights: Essential (3-star) from US$880, Comfort (4-star) US$970, Signature (5-star) US$2,050. Prices are per person in a double room, flights not included. Solo travelers pay a single-room supplement, shown in the quote.
Pick your arrival date
Pick the day you land in Lima. The trip ends after breakfast on day 6 in Cusco.
Send the free quote form with your arrival date and passport details. We check Machu Picchu tickets, trains and hotels and reply with what is available. June to August sells out first: book 30 to 45 days ahead, or 2 to 3 months ahead if you want Huayna Picchu.
Day by day
Open a day to see the hours, the altitude and where you sleep. Times are the ones our guides actually keep.
Day1
Lima airport, Miraflores, Historic Center of Lima
Night in Lima, near sea level
Our driver meets you outside customs with a sign and takes you to the hotel. Traffic from the airport to Miraflores runs 45 minutes to well over an hour, so do not plan anything tight.
The afternoon tour starts on the clifftop parks of Miraflores, Parque del Amor and the Larcomar walkway, with the Pacific below. The sky is gray for most of the year, and that is normal for Lima.
Then into the Historic Center (UNESCO, 1988): Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, the Government Palace from outside, and the bone-lined catacombs under the San Francisco convent. Back at the hotel in the early evening.
Day2
Lima, Paracas, Ballestas Islands, Ica, Huacachina
Night in Lima, below 2,000 ft
Pickup between 04:40 and 05:00 with a boxed breakfast for the road. Paracas is about three and a half hours south.
The boat passes the Candelabra geoglyph cut into the sand, then circles the islands: sea lions on the rocks, Humboldt penguins, and so many cormorants and boobies that you smell the guano before you see them. Nobody lands on the islands. Sit on the left going out for the Candelabra.
A stop at a family winery near Ica to see how pisco is distilled, with a tasting.
Dune buggy ride and sandboarding in the dunes around the Huacachina lagoon. The buggies drive hard over the crests, so hold on and keep your camera strapped. A proper board for experienced boarders costs extra. We drive back to Lima on the Panamericana and reach your hotel late at night.
Day3
Lima to Cusco flight, Qorikancha, Sacsayhuamán
Night in Cusco, 11,150 ft (3,400 m)
Transfer to Lima airport for a morning flight to Cusco, about 1 hour 20 minutes. You land at 11,150 ft (3,400 m). Walk slowly, drink water and coca tea, and eat a light lunch.
Qorikancha, the Inca sun temple with a Dominican convent built over its walls. Then the van climbs to Sacsayhuamán, whose zigzag walls use stones heavier than a loaded truck, and on to Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. Back near the Plaza de Armas around 18:30.
Day4
Cusco, Chinchero, Moray, Maras, Ollantaytambo, Aguas Calientes
Night in Aguas Calientes, 6,690 ft (2,040 m)
Pickup between 06:20 and 06:50. Pack a small overnight bag for Aguas Calientes and leave the big suitcase at the Cusco hotel, because the train has a luggage limit.
Chinchero, at 12,340 ft (3,762 m), has a colonial church on Inca walls and a weaving cooperative that shows natural dyes. Moray is a set of circular terraces sunk into the ground. At Maras, thousands of salt ponds step down the hillside, white against red earth.
Lunch at a buffet restaurant in the valley, with trout, quinoa and Andean potatoes.
A guided visit to the Ollantaytambo terraces, then the PeruRail Expedition train to Aguas Calientes along the Urubamba river, about 1 hour 40 minutes. The air gets warm and damp as you drop into cloud forest.
Day5
Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, Cusco
Night in Cusco, 11,150 ft (3,400 m)
Consettur bus up the switchbacks, about 30 minutes. Your entry time is printed on the ticket, under your passport name.
About 2 hours 30 minutes with a licensed guide on Circuit 2, the route with the classic upper view and the main temples. Circuits are one way with no re-entry, so use the restroom at the gate.
Lunch on your own in Aguas Calientes, then the PeruRail Vistadome back to Ollantaytambo, with roof windows and a snack. A van drives you up to Cusco, about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Day6
Cusco, airport transfer
End of the trip
Free morning. San Pedro market for coffee and dried fruit, or San Blas for the workshops.
Transfer to Cusco airport for your flight to Lima and your connection home.
Where you go
The trip runs south along the coast for a day, then flies 1 hour 20 minutes over the Andes to Cusco and follows the Urubamba river to Machu Picchu.

"All the tours I did (Machu, Humantay Lake, Rainbow Mountain, Sacred Valley) were spectacular!!! From picking me up at the hotel (always punctual and attentive, notifying about everything!) to the guides I had who were also excellent."
"I came to this agency by recommendation and, after traveling with them on two occasions, I can say that it was an excellent decision. I must highlight the professionalism of the guides, who made every tour very interesting and safe."
Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
Can you do Machu Picchu as a day trip from Lima?
No. Machu Picchu is about 300 miles from Lima in a straight line, across the Andes, and there is no direct road or train. You fly to Cusco (about 1 hour 20 minutes), drive to Ollantaytambo, take the train and then the bus. Even with the earliest flight, the round trip does not fit one day with a proper visit. Plan at least three days from Lima.
How far is Machu Picchu from Lima?
About 300 miles (490 km) in a straight line, and close to 700 miles by road through Cusco. In practice it is a flight to Cusco, then about 2 hours by road to Ollantaytambo and 1 hour 40 minutes by train to Aguas Calientes, plus a 30-minute bus to the gate. On this package that takes days 3 and 4.
Is 6 days enough for Lima and Machu Picchu?
It is enough for the highlights if you accept a fast pace. You get Lima, a coast day, the Cusco city tour, the Sacred Valley and a guided Machu Picchu visit. What you lose is free time in Cusco. If you want two quiet days in Cusco, add a night or book the 8-day trip.
Are the flights included?
No. Your flights home and the domestic flight to Cusco are booked by you. We send the flight times that match your pickups before you buy, and if an airline moves your flight we adjust the transfers.
Will I get altitude sickness on this trip?
Many people feel mild symptoms on the first Cusco afternoon: headache, short breath, poor sleep. This itinerary helps, since you sleep lower the following night. Walk slowly on day 3, drink water, avoid alcohol that first night, and talk to your doctor about altitude medicine before the trip.
How much is the Lima and Machu Picchu package?
From US$880 per person in a double room with 3-star hotels. Comfort with 4-star hotels is US$970 and Signature with 5-star hotels is US$2,050. Guides, trains, tickets and tours are the same in every tier. Flights are extra.
