Pachacamac Half-Day Tour from Lima
The trip in one paragraph
Pachacamac is the tour for travelers who want to see what the coast looked like before the Spanish city existed. It suits a free morning in Lima, and it pairs well with the Lima city tour in the afternoon. With a single free morning and more interest in colonial churches than ruins, take the city tour instead.
A pilgrimage site older than the Incas
For well over a thousand years, people walked here from across the Andes and the coast to consult the oracle of Pachacamac, the creator god of the central coast. The Lima, Wari and Ychma peoples built on the site before the Incas took it over and added their own Temple of the Sun on the highest hill. What you walk through is a city of sun-dried adobe pyramids, ramps and plazas on the edge of the desert, about 19 mi (31 km) south of central Lima.
The view and the idol
Our favorite moment is the top of the Temple of the Sun, with the green Lurín Valley on one side, the Pacific on the other and the Pachacamac islands offshore. The site museum keeps the wooden idol of Pachacamac, a carved post about 8 ft (2.3 m) tall with figures on every face. Look at the carving closely, because photos never show the detail.
What the ruins look like
The adobe walls are eroded and the color is mostly gone. Without a guide it reads as brown mounds. With one, it becomes a city with streets, temples and a pilgrim route.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
How far is Pachacamac from Lima?
About 19 mi (31 km) south of the historic center, in the Lurín district. From Miraflores the drive takes about an hour each way, longer at rush hour. The tour picks you up at 9:00 a.m. so you reach the site soon after it opens.
What is Pachacamac?
Pachacamac is a pre-Hispanic sanctuary on the central coast of Peru, dedicated to the creator god of the same name and visited by pilgrims for over a thousand years. Several coastal cultures built adobe temples there before the Incas added the Temple of the Sun.
Is Pachacamac worth visiting?
Yes, if you are curious about Peru before the Incas and the Spanish. It is the big pre-Inca site within an hour of Lima and gives you context that Cusco does not. Skip it if you only have one half day in Lima and want the colonial center instead.
Can I see the Pachacamac idol?
Yes. The wooden idol of Pachacamac is on display in the site museum, which reopened in 2016, and the tour includes the museum visit. The museum closes on Mondays, like the sanctuary.
Does the tour include lunch?
No. You are back at your hotel around 1:30 p.m., in time for lunch in Miraflores or Barranco. Bring water and a snack for the site, since nothing is sold inside.
