How Much a Machu Picchu Trip Costs, Line by Line

A Machu Picchu day from Cusco costs about US$250 to US$370 per person if you buy each piece yourself: the S/163 entry ticket (about US$48, as of February 2026), US$150 to US$250 for the round-trip train, US$24 for the bus, a guide and the ride to Ollantaytambo. Short answer: A Machu Picchu day from Cusco costs about US$250 to US$370 per person if you buy every piece yourself: the entry ticket at S/163 (about US$48, as of February 2026), US$150 to US$250 for the round-trip train, US$24 for the bus, a guide, and the ride to Ollantaytambo. Our day trip with all of that arranged costs US$317. Add a night in Aguas Calientes and the total rises by the room and two meals.

The question "how much does it cost to go to Machu Picchu" has two honest answers, and most pages give only one. The first is the cost of the visit itself, from Cusco and back, which this guide prices line by line with the official sources. The second is the cost of getting to Cusco, which depends on your airport and your dates, so we leave the international flight out and say what the Lima leg tends to cost. Prices below are per person. Where a number comes from a reseller or a fare guide rather than the operator, the text says so.

What a Machu Picchu visit costs, line by line

Six items make up the visit from Cusco: the entry ticket, the train, the bus up, a guide, the road leg to the train station and food. The table puts the do-it-yourself price next to what our packages include. Two items need a note before you read it.

The train is the swing item. PeruRail and Inca Rail price seats by date, hour and class, and neither publishes a flat fare. Two fare guides published in June 2026 list the base classes (PeruRail Expedition, Inca Rail Voyager) between about US$35 and US$85 one way from Ollantaytambo, and the panoramic classes (Vistadome, The 360°) between about US$55 and US$130, with the higher figures on dry-season mornings. Budget US$150 to US$250 for the round trip and check the live price on perurail.com or incarail.com before you decide anything else.

The entry ticket is the fixed one. A foreign adult pays S/152 for a standard route plus an S/11 SERNANP fee charged from 1 May 2026, S/163 in total, about US$48 at the rate reported when the fee was announced (as of February 2026, Infobae citing the Ministerio de Cultura and SERNANP). The summit routes to Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain cost more, and the official site shows the figure in force. How to buy it without losing the slot is in our Machu Picchu tickets guide.

Bus, guide and the road to the station

The bus from Aguas Calientes to the gate costs US$24 round trip for a foreign adult, US$12 one way, according to published fare lists for 2026, with some sources printing up to US$35. Consettur's own site did not load for us, so take the lower figure as the floor and confirm at the ticket window in town, which also sells the next morning's ride.

A licensed guide is required by the park regulations, and even where the gate does not check, the one-way circuits reward one. Published cost guides for 2026 put a guide hired for your own group at US$80 to US$150 for 2 to 3 hours (How to Peru, May 2026), split among up to eight or so people, and a place in a shared group at the entrance at roughly US$30 to US$50 per person. Our packages include a licensed guide, which is why the comparison below counts one.

From Cusco to the Ollantaytambo station you have a shared colectivo van, a taxi or the transfer bundled in a package. We do not print a fare for the van and taxi because they are negotiated on the day and change with fuel prices. Count the leg as a cost, and count the 4:00 a.m. departure and the 90 minutes on the road as part of the price too. Our how to get to Machu Picchu guide covers the road and the stations.

Adding a night in Aguas Calientes

Sleeping in Aguas Calientes turns the long day into two short ones and puts you at the gate for the 6:00 a.m. slot. The cost is a room and two meals. On Booking.com rates checked on 1 October 2026, a well-rated 3-star room ran US$67 to US$105 a night at Casa de Luz and US$100 to US$134 at Casa Andina Standard, and the high-end hotels by the gate and the river ran from several hundred dollars up. The full list with scores and dates is in our guide to the best hotels in Aguas Calientes.

Food in town costs more than in Cusco, because everything arrives by train. Plan on US$15 to US$25 for a sit-down lunch and about the same for dinner, which is the figure we give travelers on our packages. The market stalls and the set-menu places near the station cost a third of that if you are counting.

When a package is cheaper

Our day trip from Cusco, US$317 all in includes the van from your hotel to Ollantaytambo and back, the round-trip train, the Consettur bus both ways, the Circuit 2 entry ticket under your name and a licensed English-speaking guide for about 2 hours 30 minutes inside. Line those up against the do-it-yourself column and the package lands inside the range, with the ticket risk, the timetable matching and the 4:00 a.m. van handled by us.

Machu Picchu & Cusco in 4 Days42 Cusco nights, 1 Aguas Calientes night, Sacred Valley day, train, ticket, bus, guidesUS$774

The 2-day version with a night in town starts at US$597 with a 3-star hotel, the morning Vistadome out, the Expedition back, lunch, dinner and breakfast. The 3-day package with two Cusco nights starts at US$727, and the 4-day package with the Sacred Valley at US$774. Every one of these prices is per person in a double room and includes the same ticket, train, bus and guide. Our Machu Picchu tours from Cusco page compares all nine.

A package is not always the cheaper option, and we say so. A traveler who takes the Expedition both ways, walks down the stairs instead of taking the bus back, joins a shared guide at the gate and rides a colectivo to Ollantaytambo spends less than US$317. What they buy with the difference is their own time on the booking sites and the risk that the entry slot and the train do not match. For a first visit, with one shot at the date, we think the package pays for itself the first time a train sells out.

Ways to spend less

Travel in the green season, November to April, when the trains have seats at the lower fares and the daily visitor limit drops. Book the Expedition or The Voyager for the return, when the gorge is dark anyway. Walk down from the citadel to town on the stone stairs, about 1 hour 30 minutes, and save the US$12 bus leg. Share a guide with the people around you at the gate. Eat where the station workers eat. And buy the entry ticket the moment your dates are firm, because the cheapest train seats go to people who already know their entry hour.

The budget route is the van from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica and the 6 mile (10 km) walk along the rails to Aguas Calientes. It skips the train in both directions and costs a full day each way. Our how-to guide above explains it. We only suggest it to travelers with days to spare.

Getting to Cusco

From the United States you fly to Lima, then take a flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes to Cusco. Round-trip fares between Lima and Cusco show up in searches at about US$100 to US$300 depending on dates and how early you book (fare searches, October 2026). The international leg is the biggest line in the whole trip and it changes by city, season and airline, so we do not print a figure. Price it on your own dates, and land in Cusco at least one full day before your Machu Picchu entry, since a delayed flight does not stop the train.

Spending in Peru runs on soles and US dollars both. Cards work at hotels, train stations and most restaurants in Cusco. Carry small bills in soles for the bus line, the market and tips, and keep the exchange rate in mind when a price is quoted in either currency.

Questions people ask

How much does a Machu Picchu trip cost from the United States?

Count three blocks. The visit itself from Cusco: US$250 to US$370 a head done yourself, or US$317 on our day trip with ticket, train, bus and guide. The Lima to Cusco flights: about US$100 to US$300 round trip in fare searches (October 2026). And the international flight to Lima, which changes by city and date and is usually the largest line, so price it on your own dates.

What is the cheapest way to visit Machu Picchu?

Green season dates, the base train class both ways, a shared guide joined at the gate, the stairs down instead of the bus, and a set-menu lunch in Aguas Calientes. That keeps a day from Cusco below US$317. The cheapest route of all is the Hidroeléctrica van and the 6 mile (10 km) walk beside the rails, which saves the train and costs a full day each way.

How much is the Machu Picchu entry ticket?

S/152 for a foreign adult, plus the S/11 SERNANP fee charged from 1 May 2026, so S/163 in total, about US$48 at the rate reported in February 2026 by Infobae citing the Ministerio de Cultura. Routes that climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain cost more. The official site, tuboleto.cultura.pe, always shows the rate in force.

How much is the train to Machu Picchu?

Class, date and hour set the fare, because PeruRail and Inca Rail price each departure. Fare guides from June 2026 list base classes at about US$35 to US$85 one way out of Ollantaytambo and panoramic classes at about US$55 to US$130. Plan on US$150 to US$250 for the round trip and check the live fare on perurail.com or incarail.com before booking anything else.

Is a Machu Picchu tour cheaper than doing it yourself?

About the same for a day trip, and simpler. Our day trip costs US$317 with van, train, bus, Circuit 2 ticket and a licensed guide, which is inside the US$250 to US$370 a careful traveler spends buying each piece. A package costs more than the bare minimum, with the base train both ways and a guide shared at the gate, and less than a plan that goes wrong when a train sells out.

How much cash should I carry on the Machu Picchu visit?

Enough soles for lunch, the bus window if you pay there, tips and the market: around S/200 to S/300 per person covers a day in Aguas Calientes. Cards work at the train stations, hotels and most restaurants, and the Consettur office in town takes cards for the bus ticket, so cash is for small things and for the moments the card machine is offline.
