How We Ranked These Hotels
We ranked hotels by their public guest score on Booking.com, read on October 1, 2026, and kept only places with at least 100 reviews. Each card names the platform, the score, the number of reviews and the date. Walking minutes to the bus stop and the train station come from OpenStreetMap foot routing at a flat pace. Prices are the cheapest double for two adults on two sample nights, October 20 and November 14, 2026.
One thing surprised us. The famous luxury hotels in town score lower with guests than several mid-range places. Guests rate value as well as comfort, and at US$400 to 900 a night they expect more. We do not sell rooms in these hotels and none paid to be here. There are no hotel photos, only a map card for each.
Where to Sleep in Aguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes, also called Machu Picchu Pueblo, is a small town at about 6,690 ft (2,040 m) in a narrow gorge where the Aguas Calientes stream meets the Urubamba River. The town has no car traffic, so you walk from the train to your hotel. Every hotel on this list is within about seven minutes of both the train station and the bus stop, which is why location matters less here than in Cusco.
It still matters a little. The buses to Machu Picchu leave from Avenida Hermanos Ayar, by the river, and the line forms before dawn. A hotel one minute from the line lets you join it with coffee in hand. The train station sits at the lower end of town, so a hotel next to it helps on the night you arrive late.
Pack for warm, damp air. People dress for Cusco cold and find Aguas Calientes humid and mild, closer to a cloud forest than a mountain town. Our Aguas Calientes town guide covers the streets, the hot springs and where to eat.
Which Hotel Is Closest to the Bus Stop?
By our map tool, Casa del Sol, Casa de Luz and Hatun Inti are all about a minute on foot from the bus stop on Avenida Hermanos Ayar. Tierra Viva and Sumaq are three minutes away. Casa Andina Standard is four minutes, and Inkaterra is seven, past the station. The difference between one and seven minutes is small, unless you plan to be on the first bus.
The Hotels, by Budget
The cards follow budget from the Sanctuary Lodge down to the lowest rate, and within each group the Booking.com score, highest first. Each card lists the score with its source and date, walking minutes to the bus and the train, and the price level.

Is the Sanctuary Lodge Worth the Price?
For most travelers, no. On our two sample nights it cost more than US$2,100 for a double, about thirty times the cheapest well-rated room in town. What you buy is location. You reach the gate before the first buses arrive and walk back to your room in the middle of the day. Everyone else rides the bus up and down, which takes about 25 to 30 minutes each way.
It is worth it in one case: a honeymoon or a milestone anniversary where the money is not the question. For everyone else, a hotel by the bus stop, an early bus and a good guide give you nearly the same morning at the ruins.
Aguas Calientes Hotels in Our Packages
Our 2-day tour, hotel included by tier, sleeps one night in Aguas Calientes and starts at US$597 per person in a double room. Questions people ask
Which hotel is closest to the Machu Picchu bus stop?
On this list, Casa del Sol, Casa de Luz and Hatun Inti are each about a minute on foot from the bus stop on Avenida Hermanos Ayar, measured with OpenStreetMap walking routes on October 1, 2026. Every hotel here is within about seven minutes, so pick on score and price first.
Is the Sanctuary Lodge worth the price?
Only if price does not matter. It is the only hotel at the citadel gate and scored 9.3 on Booking.com as of October 1, 2026, but our sample nights cost over US$2,100 for a double. A hotel by the bus stop in town and an early bus get you nearly the same morning for a fraction of the price.
Should I stay overnight in Aguas Calientes?
Yes, if you can. A night in town lets you take an early bus and see Machu Picchu before the day-trip crowds arrive from Cusco. It also turns a very long day trip from Cusco into two calm days. One night is enough for most people, two if you want to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
How much is a hotel in Aguas Calientes?
On our sample nights in October and November 2026, well-rated hotels in town ran from about US$67 to 232 for a double on Booking.com. The luxury hotels in town ran about US$411 to 884, and the Sanctuary Lodge over US$2,100. Prices climb from June to August.
Can I leave my big suitcase in Cusco?
Yes, and you should. The trains to Aguas Calientes allow only a small bag per traveler, and the town has no cars to carry luggage. Leave your suitcase at your Cusco hotel, which almost every hotel stores for free, and travel with an overnight bag. Check the current limit on the PeruRail or Inca Rail site.
