In this guide
At 6 a.m. the cars parked along the streets of Cusco wear a thin coat of frost, and your breath hangs in the air while you wait for the van. You are in a down jacket, a hat and gloves. Six hours later, back on the Plaza de Armas, you are in a T-shirt, squinting at a sky so blue it looks painted.
Short answer: Yes, for weather, not for space. July is the coldest month in the Andes and, with June, the driest: Cusco has about 1 rain day, sunny highs near 69°F (20.8°C) and nights near 30°F (minus 1.3°C). Machu Picchu is at its busiest with 5,600 visitors a day. Lima is gray. Independence Day falls on 28 and 29 July.
July is when most American families can travel, because school is out, and it is also one of the two driest months in Cusco, along with June. Put those together and you get the peak of the year. A July trip goes well when you book early and plan around the crowds. It goes badly when you land in Cusco with nothing booked. Peru weather in July, region by region
July is the coldest month in the Andes, as dry as June, and one of the grayest on the coast. The SENAMHI 1991 to 2020 climate normals in the table show the lowest night temperatures of the year in Cusco and Puno.
| Place | High (°F / °C) | Low (°F / °C) | Rain (in / mm) | Rain days | Crowds | What to do |

Cusco and the Sacred Valley in July
Cusco averages a high of 69°F (20.8°C) and a low of 30°F (minus 1.3°C) in July, with 0.2 in (4.2 mm) of rain and about 1 wet day. The gap between noon and midnight is about 40°F (22°C). You wear a down jacket at breakfast and a T-shirt at lunch. Old stone hotels hold the cold, so nights inside feel colder than the number. Check that your room has heating.
Every day trip is in season: Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, Palccoyo, the Sacred Valley. Leave early and you beat the cold and the crowd at the same time.
Machu Picchu in July
Machu Picchu in July averages 72°F (22.1°C) by day and 49°F (9.4°C) at night, the coldest nights of the year there, with 2.1 in (54 mm) of rain. The citadel is in high season with the 5,600-a-day limit (as of the 2026 calendar), and July and August are the fullest weeks of all. Expect a line for the buses up from Aguas Calientes and company at every viewpoint on the circuits.
The answer is timing and booking. Reserve the entry ticket and the train at least three months ahead, pick an entry slot that matches your train, and sleep in Aguas Calientes if you want an early or late visit. Our Machu Picchu tickets guide explains how slots and circuits work.
The Inca Trail in July
July is peak season on the Inca Trail. The trail is dry, the passes are clear, and the camps are the coldest of the year, below freezing at Pacaymayo, where you will want your gloves on to unzip the tent. Permits for July sell out first, often within weeks of going on sale, as our Inca Trail permits guide explains. Without a permit, the Salkantay trek is the strong alternative in July.
Lake Titicaca in July
Puno averages a high of 59°F (14.9°C) and a low of 31°F (minus 0.8°C) in July, with 0.1 in (3.4 mm) of rain. The sky is clear every day and the lake is at its bluest. Nights are the coldest of the year, below freezing on average, so a heated hotel in Puno matters more than a lake view. Wear a warm hat on the early boat, because the wind off the water bites.
Lima and the coast in July
Lima in July averages 64°F (18°C) by day and 60°F (15.4°C) at night, under a gray sky with light drizzle on about 3 days. Ica is sunny and mild at 77°F (25.2°C). If you want blue sky on the coast, head to the desert.
Festivals and holidays in July
Virgen del Carmen, Paucartambo, 15 to 18 July
The town of Paucartambo, about three hours from Cusco by road, celebrates the Virgen del Carmen from 15 to 18 July, with 16 July as the main day, according to Andina. For four days masked dance groups take over the streets, and people watch from the rooftops. The festival was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2006. Rooms in Paucartambo are scarce, so most visitors stay with families or go for the day.
Independence Day, 28 and 29 July
Peru's national holidays, Fiestas Patrias, fall on 28 and 29 July, and 23 July (Air Force Day) is a holiday too. Peruvian families travel that week, so domestic flights, Cusco hotels and Machu Picchu fill up even more. If your dates touch the last week of July, book early.
Crowds and prices in July
July is the busiest month of the year at Machu Picchu and on the Inca Trail, with the North American summer holidays and Fiestas Patrias landing in the same weeks. Hotel rates in Cusco and Aguas Calientes sit at their high-season level. The upside is real, though. Everything runs, the weather is reliable, and with three months of booking you get the slots you want.
