How Many Days in Peru? A Day Count for Every Kind of Trip
Plan 10 days in Peru for a first trip: Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca without a rushed day. Seven days covers Lima and the Cusco region. Fourteen adds Arequipa and the Colca Canyon or Bolivia. Machu Picchu alone needs at least 3 days from Cusco's airport.

In this guide
Your first evening in Cusco, you climb the stone steps toward San Blas and stop halfway, hand on the wall, breathing like you ran a mile. The street smells of wood smoke and coca tea from the café doors. That pause on the stairs is the reason a Peru trip needs more days than the map suggests.
Short answer: Plan 10 days in Peru for a first trip: Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca without a rushed day. Seven days covers Lima and the Cusco region. Fourteen adds Arequipa and the Colca Canyon or Bolivia. Machu Picchu alone needs at least 3 days from Cusco's airport.
Those numbers count days on the ground in Peru. Add one travel day each way from the United States. What American travelers usually ask us is how many vacation days to spend, and the honest answer hangs on two things: Lake Titicaca in or out, and how your body handles altitude. Below you get a day count for each kind of trip, a calculator you can do with a pencil, and the packages that fit each length.
How many days you need, by trip length
The table lists the realistic shapes of a Peru trip from 3 to 15 days, what each one covers and the package of ours that matches it. Every package price is per person in a double room on the Essential tier, flights not included. Read the "what you give up" column before you fall for the shortest option.
| Days on the ground | What fits | What you give up | Our package that matches | From, per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Cusco city and a Machu Picchu day trip | Sacred Valley, time to adjust | Machu Picchu and Cusco in 3 Days | US$727 |
| 4 | Cusco, Sacred Valley, a night in Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu | Lima, the lake | Machu Picchu and Cusco in 4 Days | US$774 |
| 5 | The 4-day trip plus Rainbow Mountain | Lima, the lake | Machu Picchu and Cusco in 5 Days | US$914 |
| 6 | Lima, the Ballestas coast, Cusco, Machu Picchu | Nazca, the lake, a slow day | Lima and Machu Picchu in 6 Days | US$880 |
| 7 | Lima, Nazca Lines flight, Cusco, Machu Picchu | The lake, rest days | Peru in 7 Days | US$900 |
| 8 to 9 | The 7-day trip plus Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake | The lake | Peru in 8 Days, Peru in 9 Days | US$1,190 and US$1,660 |
| 10 | Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca with a homestay | Nazca, the high day hikes | Aymara Ceremony Tour in 10 Days | US$1,347 |
| 14 to 15 | Coast, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Picchu | Nothing on the southern loop | Complete Peru in 15 Days | US$2,084 |

Why the count is higher than the map suggests
Three things add days that a map does not show: altitude, the train to Machu Picchu and the distances between regions.
Altitude sets the pace. Cusco is at 3,399 m (11,152 ft), and the CDC Yellow Book lists a flight into Cusco as a fast ascent. Most people need two easy days before a long hike or a 4 a.m. start. A plan with Rainbow Mountain on day two looks efficient on paper and falls apart on the trail. Our Cusco altitude guide explains why the order of the stops matters.
Machu Picchu is a one-day visit that takes two calendar days to do well. From Cusco it is a van and a train each way, about 15 hours round trip on the day-trip version. Sleep one night in Aguas Calientes, below the ruins, and that long day becomes two short ones, with you standing at the gate for the first slots while the mist is still lifting off the river.
Distances are long and the roads are slow. Lima to Cusco is a flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes, but Cusco to Puno is about ten hours on the daytime bus. Every region you add costs a travel day. That is why 7 days fits two regions and 10 days fits three.
Quick calculator: add up your own trip
Pick the places you want, add the days in the table, then add one buffer day for weather, strikes or a delayed flight. That total is your number of days on the ground. The calculator uses the pace we plan for American travelers in their 30s to 70s: one main activity a day and no back-to-back early starts.
| Place or activity | Days to add | Why that many |
|---|---|---|
| Lima | 1 to 2 | Arrival from the US and the food scene. One night is enough if you connect straight to Cusco. |
| Cusco and the Sacred Valley | 3 | Two easy days to adjust plus one valley day. Count 2 if you already slept in the valley. |
| Machu Picchu | 2 | Train down, night in Aguas Calientes, visit, train back. 1 if you accept a 15-hour day trip. |
| Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake | 1 each | Full days with a 4 a.m. pickup. Only after two nights in Cusco. |
| Lake Titicaca | 3 | One travel day from Cusco, one lake day, one day to fly out from Juliaca. |
| Paracas, Huacachina and the Nazca Lines | 2 | A long road day south and the flight the next morning. |
| Arequipa and the Colca Canyon | 3 to 4 | A city day, the road over the high pass and a canyon morning. |
| Classic Inca Trail | 4 plus 2 | Four trekking days and two nights in Cusco before the start. |
| Bolivia: La Paz and Uyuni | 4 to 5 | Border crossing, La Paz, the night bus and the salt flat circuit. |
| Buffer | 1 | Weather, strikes and delayed flights happen in the Andes. |
Example: Lima (1) plus Cusco and the valley (3) plus Machu Picchu (2) plus Lake Titicaca (3) plus one buffer day comes to 10 days. Drop the lake and the buffer and you are at 6, the shortest version of Peru that still feels like a vacation and not a relay race.
How many days for Machu Picchu
Give Machu Picchu 3 to 4 days from the moment you land in Cusco: one or two days to adjust, a Sacred Valley day that ends at the train, and the visit itself. Our 4-day Machu Picchu and Cusco package, from US$774, is built that way and is the length we recommend. The 3-day version, from US$727, works when time is short, with the visit as a long day trip.
From the United States, a Machu Picchu-only trip is 5 to 6 days door to door: a day to reach Lima, the Cusco days, and a day back. For how long to spend in Cusco itself, and what to do with each day, read our how many days in Cusco guide.
Is 7 days enough for Peru?
Yes, for two regions. Seven days covers Lima and the Cusco region, with Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, at a pace that leaves room for the altitude. It does not cover Lake Titicaca without a night bus or a rushed day. Our 7-day Peru itinerary lays out the day-by-day options, and the 7-day package with Nazca and Machu Picchu starts at US$900.
Ten days, the length we recommend
Ten days is the shortest trip that includes Lake Titicaca without cutting a corner, and it is what we recommend for a first visit. You add the lake after Cusco, which is also the right order for altitude, since Puno is about 430 m higher. Our 10-day Peru itinerary compares the two ways to spend those days: the lake, or more Andes hikes.
Two weeks and more
With 14 or 15 days you can climb slowly from the coast through Arequipa and the Colca Canyon to the lake and Cusco, or add Bolivia's Uyuni salt flats. Both are good trips. Neither fits in less than 12 days without overnight buses every other night. Our 2-week Peru itinerary covers both routes, and the full list of lengths is on our Peru vacation packages page.
Whatever the length, cost follows the days and the hotel tier more than anything else. Our Peru trip cost guide prices each length line by line, and the main Peru itinerary guide explains how to plan the route.
Questions people ask
How many days do you need in Peru?
Ten days for a first trip that takes in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. Seven days is enough for Lima and the Cusco region. Two weeks lets you add Arequipa and the Colca Canyon or Bolivia's Uyuni salt flats. Add one travel day each way from the United States on top of those numbers.
Is 5 days enough for Peru?
Five days is enough for Cusco and Machu Picchu, not for Peru as a whole. Spend all of them in the Cusco region: a day to adjust, the Sacred Valley, a night in Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu and one more day in Cusco or on Rainbow Mountain. Skip Lima sightseeing and the lake, since each needs at least one more day.
How many days do you need for Machu Picchu?
Plan 3 to 4 days from your arrival in Cusco: one or two days to adjust to the altitude, a Sacred Valley day that ends at the train, and the visit itself after a night in Aguas Calientes. You spend about 2 hours 30 minutes inside the citadel, but the train and the early slots turn it into a two-day affair when done well.
Is 2 weeks too long for Peru?
No. Two weeks is the length that lets you see the south without overnight buses: the coast, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Cusco and Machu Picchu, or a Peru and Bolivia loop with the Uyuni salt flats. We rarely hear from travelers who wish they had stayed shorter. The regret we hear is a 7-day trip that tried to fit everything.
How long to spend in Peru for a first trip?
Ten to twelve days on the ground. That covers the three places most first-time visitors want (Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca), plus a night in Lima and a free day for weather or strikes. With only a week, stay in the Cusco region and save the lake for a second trip.
