How We Ranked These Hotels
We used each hotel's public guest score on Tripadvisor, read on October 1, 2026, and kept only places with a few hundred reviews or more. The card under each hotel shows the score, the number of reviews and the date, with a link to check it. We list no prices, because Puno rates change with Candelaria in February and with the dry season, and we show no hotel photos, since those belong to the hotels.
We do not sell rooms and no hotel paid to be here. The opinions come from our guides, who pick travelers up at these doors for the boats to the Uros and Taquile.
Lakefront or Puno Center?
Pick a lakefront hotel if the lake is the reason you came and you will spend evenings in. Pick the center if you want to walk to dinner, the cathedral and the Jirón Lima pedestrian street. Most lakefront hotels sit 2 to 2.5 miles (3 to 4 km) from the Plaza de Armas in a straight line, so every trip into town means a taxi.
| Area | Distance to Plaza de Armas (straight line) | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lakefront, Av. Sesquicentenario and Isla Esteves | 2 to 2.6 mi (3.2 to 4.1 km) | Lake views, quiet evenings | Taxi for every trip into town |
| Puno center | Walking distance | Restaurants, the cathedral, Jirón Lima | Street noise, heating varies |
| Platería (Titilaka) | About 20 mi (32 km) | Two or more slow nights, all included | Too far for a one-night stop |
| Amantaní Island | Boat ride from the Puno pier | A night with a Quechua family | Basic rooms, cold nights |
| Llachón, Capachica Peninsula | About 46 mi (74 km) by road | Family homestay reached by road | Far from Puno restaurants |
Both work for the boat tours, since operators collect you from either area. What decides it is the cold. Puno is at 12,565 ft (3,830 m), and the average July low is 31°F (minus 0.8°C), per SENAMHI figures quoted on Wikipedia. A lakefront room with a view is wonderful at sunset and chilly at 5 a.m. The large hotels have heating. Many small hotels in the center rely on blankets and a space heater on request, so ask before you book.
Lakefront Hotels
The lakefront hotels line the Avenida Sesquicentenario north of the city, with Isla Esteves at the end, a small island joined to the shore by a causeway. From their rooms you look over the totora reed beds toward the Uros. Titilaka is a different case: a lodge on its own peninsula near Platería, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of central Puno in a straight line, with meals and excursions included in the rate, according to its Tripadvisor listing.
Hotels in the Center
Central Puno is compact. Tierra Viva Puno Plaza sits half a block from the Plaza de Armas, and the restaurants of Jirón Lima are a few minutes away on foot. The center is noisy until late on weekends and during festival weeks. In February, during the Fiesta de la Candelaria, book months ahead or stay on the lakefront.
Islands and Lake Communities
The lake itself offers three kinds of overnight stay, all run by the families who live there. On the Uros floating islands, a few families run small lodges built of totora reed, about 30 minutes by boat from the Puno pier. On Amantaní, a Quechua-speaking island community, families host visitors in their own homes. On the Capachica Peninsula, the Quechua community of Llachón runs rural homestays in family houses.
Amantaní Homestay
Amantaní is a round island of about 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²) with two hilltop temples, Pachatata and Pachamama, per Wikipedia. Visitors sleep in family houses, and the island's community lodging association assigns guests to families in rotation so the income is shared, according to Lonely Planet. Rooms are simple and clean, the bathroom is often across the yard, and dinner is soup, quinoa and potatoes at the family table. Bring a headlamp, a warm layer for the night and small bills for the family's crafts.
Several of our trips include this night. The Aymara Baptism itineraries sail from Puno to Llachón for the ceremony, continue to Amantaní, climb Pachatata at sunset and sleep in a family home on the island. See the 10-day trip with a night on Amantaní.
Llachón Homestays
Llachón sits on the Capachica Peninsula, about 46 miles (74 km) from Puno by road, according to Tourism Cares. Families open their houses to visitors and share fishing, farm work and cooking. The road access makes it easier than an island for travelers who dread a long boat ride, and the sunsets over the lake are the reason to go.
GHL Hotel Lago Titicaca
Isla Esteves, lakefront, Puno
The hotel covers most of Isla Esteves, so nearly every window faces water. It is the lakefront choice for people who want a big full-service hotel. Expect a taxi ride of about 2.6 miles (4.1 km) in a straight line to the Plaza de Armas for dinner in town.

Questions people ask
Is it better to stay on the lakefront or in Puno center?
For views and quiet evenings at the hotel, the lakefront. For walking to restaurants and the Plaza de Armas, the center. Boat tours pick up from both areas. The lakefront hotels sit about 2 to 2.5 miles (3 to 4 km) from the plaza in a straight line, so every outing into town needs a taxi.
Can you stay overnight on Lake Titicaca islands?
Yes. Amantaní families host visitors in their homes, assigned in rotation by the island's lodging association, and some Uros families run small reed lodges. Llachón, on the Capachica Peninsula, offers family homestays you can reach by road. Rooms are basic and nights are cold, and the evening with the family is the reason to do it.
How cold is Puno at night?
Cold, even in summer. SENAMHI data quoted on Wikipedia put the average July low in Puno, 12,565 ft (3,830 m) up, at 31°F (minus 0.8°C). Even in January the average low is about 43°F (5.9°C). Pick a hotel with heating, or confirm that the hotel supplies a heater, and sleep in a warm base layer on the islands.
How many nights do you need in Puno?
Two nights is the minimum we recommend. One full day covers the Uros and Taquile by boat, and the second night lets you rest before a long road to Cusco or the Bolivian border. Add a night on Amantaní if you want time with a lake family, which turns the visit into three nights.
Do Puno hotels have oxygen?
Several larger hotels keep oxygen at the front desk for guests who feel the altitude, according to guest reviews on Tripadvisor, including GHL Lago Titicaca, Casa Andina Premium and Tierra Viva Puno Plaza. Ask your hotel before arrival. If you have heart or lung conditions, talk to your doctor about Puno's altitude before the trip.
