Uros and Taquile Islands Full Day from Puno
The trip in one paragraph
This is the classic Lake Titicaca boat day and the one we recommend to anyone spending at least one full day in Puno. You see two very different places: the Uros islands, built by hand from totora reed in the bay of Puno, and Taquile, a natural stone island far out on the lake where weaving and knitting are part of daily life. If you want the Aymara shore and colonial churches instead of islands, take the Aymara Route day tour.
Reed islands first
The boat leaves the Puno port in the morning and reaches the Uros in about 30 minutes. A family on one of the islands shows how the reed blocks are cut, tied and stacked, and how fresh layers are added as the lower ones rot. The ground gives under your feet like a mattress. A ride on a reed boat is offered for a small fee in cash, and it goes to the family.
Then the long crossing to Taquile
Taquile is about two and a half to three hours further on a regular tourist boat. The island's textile art, from the calendar belts to the knitted chullo hats, is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, proclaimed in 2005 and inscribed in 2008. The community runs its own tourism, so lunch is cooked by island families. You climb from the dock to the main square, which is the only real effort of the day, and walk down to the boat on the other side.
What people get wrong
They expect warm weather on a lake. The water sits at 12,507 ft (3,812 m), the sun burns in minutes and the wind on the boat roof is cold. Bring both sunscreen and a jacket.
Price
One price for the day: US$127 per person, shared service, with the boat from the Puno port, a licensed guide, the community entry fees on the Uros and Taquile, and lunch on Taquile. Send your date through the free quote form and we confirm the seats within the day.
Pick your tour date
The boats run every day of the year. Pick your date and send the free quote form. We confirm the seats within the day.
Plan it for your first full day in Puno only if you came from Cusco, so you are already used to the altitude. A few days ahead is enough outside the June to August peak.

The long leg of the day, across open water. Sit on the roof for the view if the wind allows, inside if it does not.

Still have questions?
Everything we get asked about this package before people book.
What is the difference between the Uros and Taquile?
The Uros are artificial islands, about half an hour from the Puno port, that resident families build and rebuild from totora. Taquile is a natural island of rock and terraced fields, about three hours out, whose textile craft UNESCO lists as intangible heritage.
How long is the boat ride to Taquile?
About 30 minutes from Puno to the Uros, then close to three hours from the Uros to Taquile on a regular tourist boat, and about three hours back. Most of the day is on the water, which is part of the trip: the lake is huge and the views change constantly.
Is the Uros islands tour worth doing?
Yes, as part of this full day. Critics call the Uros touristy, and the families do earn most of their income from visitors. That is the point: your visit pays them directly. Pair it with Taquile and you see two ways of living on the lake.
Is Taquile hard to walk?
Not hard, but slow. You gain height on stone steps at close to 12,960 ft (3,950 m), steady rather than steep. If you have been in Cusco or Puno for two days or more, you will manage it with breaks.
What should I bring for the Lake Titicaca boat tour?
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the glare off the water, a fleece and a windproof jacket for the crossing, water, your passport, and small bills in soles. Wear shoes you can climb stone steps in.
Can I stay overnight on the islands instead?
Yes, on Amantaní or with families on the Capachica peninsula. Our multi-day trips with a night on Amantaní include it. This full day is for travelers with one day on the lake.
