Peru in May: Weather, Crowds and Festivals
Yes, May is our first choice for the Andes. The dry season starts: Cusco gets about 2 rain days and 0.2 in (6.3 mm) of rain, sunny highs near 70°F (21.3°C) and cold nights. Machu Picchu is clear and keeps the low-season cap until 18 June. Lima turns gray. Corpus Christi falls on 27 May in 2027.

In this guide
You step out of your Cusco hotel at seven in the morning and your breath shows in the air. By ten you are peeling off the fleece in the Sacred Valley, squinting at a sky without a single cloud, and the terraces below Pisac are still green from the rains that ended a few weeks ago. At night, back in the city, you will want that fleece again, and a hat.
Short answer: Yes, May is our first choice for the Andes.
When a traveler asks us for one month, we say May. The rains are over, the terraces are still green, the Inca Trail has been open for two months and the June crowds have not arrived. The only real trade-off is cold nights in Cusco and Puno and a gray sky in Lima. Below are the numbers, the festival dates and a route from our packages. Peru weather in May, region by region
In May the Andes enter the dry season and the coast enters its cloudy winter. The table uses the SENAMHI 1991 to 2020 climate normals, and the shift in Cusco is sharp: rain drops from 1.3 in (33 mm) in April to 0.2 in (6.3 mm) in May.
| Place | High (°F / °C) | Low (°F / °C) | Rain (in / mm) | Rain days | Crowds | What to do |

| Lima | 71 / 21.4 | 63 / 17 | under 0.1 / 0.4 | about 1 (drizzle) | Medium | Food and museums under gray sky |

May in Cusco and the Sacred Valley
Cusco averages a high of 70°F (21.3°C) and a low of 34°F (1°C) in May, with 0.2 in (6.3 mm) of rain over about 2 days. The days are bright and dry, and the noon sun bites on your neck. The nights drop close to freezing, with the first frosts at the end of the month. Hotels in old colonial houses hold the cold in their thick walls, so ask for heating when you book.
Every day trip works in May. Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake have clear mornings, and the Sacred Valley still has green fields from the rains.
Machu Picchu in May: crowds and weather
Machu Picchu in May averages 71°F (21.9°C) by day and 51°F (10.8°C) at night, with 2.9 in (73 mm) of rain, less than half of April. The low-season limit of 4,500 visitors a day stays in force until 18 June, and high season with 5,600 starts on 19 June (as of the 2026 calendar, Ministerio de Cultura). That makes May the clearest month with the low cap.
Poroy station is usually open again from May. For the current year PeruRail resumed trains from San Pedro and Poroy on 1 May 2026. Book the entry ticket and the train about a month ahead for May, and two to three months ahead for Huayna Picchu. The Machu Picchu tickets guide has the details.
May on the Inca Trail
May opens the peak trekking season on the Inca Trail. Campsites are dry, the passes are clear, and the nights at Pacaymayo are cold enough to frost the tent. Permits for May go early, often months ahead, as the Inca Trail permits guide explains. Salkantay is in season too, with frost on the grass at Soraypampa in the morning.
May at Lake Titicaca
Puno averages a high of 60°F (15.5°C) and a low of 34°F (1.2°C) in May, with 0.3 in (7.2 mm) of rain. The sky is clear and the lake deep blue, but the nights are cold and getting colder. A homestay on Amantaní in May means a cold room under heavy blankets and more stars than you have seen in years. Bring a warm hat and sleep in layers.
May in Lima and on the coast
Lima cools to 71°F (21.4°C) by day and 63°F (17°C) at night in May, and the gray winter ceiling settles over the city for the following months. It almost never rains. Ica stays sunny at 85°F (29.2°C), so head to the dunes if you want blue sky on the coast.
May festivals and holidays
1 May, Labor Day, is a national holiday. In 2027 the two big Andean feasts that follow Easter also fall in May, because Easter is early.
Qoyllur Rit'i, Ocongate
Qoyllur Rit'i is a Quechua and Catholic pilgrimage to the Sinakara sanctuary near Ocongate, above 15,090 ft (4,600 m), held in the days before Trinity Sunday. Trinity Sunday falls on 23 May 2027. UNESCO inscribed the pilgrimage as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011. It is a serious pilgrimage at extreme altitude, with no tourist services. We do not sell it as a tour, and we advise going only with someone who knows the communities.
Corpus Christi, Cusco
Corpus Christi falls 60 days after Easter, on 27 May 2027. In Cusco the patron saints and virgins of the city's parishes are carried into the cathedral and the Plaza de Armas for the feast, and families eat chiri uchu, a cold dish made only for this day. The plaza is packed shoulder to shoulder. In 2026 the feast fell on 4 June, and in 2028 it falls on 15 June.
May crowds and prices
May is busier than April and much calmer than July. Trains and tickets need about a month, Inca Trail permits much more. Cusco hotels are on shoulder rates, rising in the week of Corpus Christi.
What to pack for a May trip

- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for strong midday sun.
- A light rain shell for the odd shower at Machu Picchu.
- A fleece and long sleeves for gray Lima.
- Lip balm and moisturizer for the dry air.
The full list is in our Peru packing list.

Questions people ask
Is May a good time to visit Peru?
Yes, it is our first choice for the Andes. May starts the dry season, with about 2 rain days in Cusco and highs near 70°F (21.3°C), fields still green from the rains, and Machu Picchu on its low-season cap of 4,500 a day until 18 June. Nights are cold and Lima turns gray.
Is Machu Picchu crowded in May, before high season?
Less than in June to August. The daily limit is 4,500 visitors until 18 June, then 5,600 from 19 June (as of the 2026 calendar). Morning slots still sell first, so book the ticket and train about a month ahead and Huayna Picchu two to three months ahead.
What is the May weather like at Machu Picchu?
Mostly dry and mild. SENAMHI normals give highs of 71°F (21.9°C), lows of 51°F (10.8°C) and 2.9 in (73 mm) of rain in May. Most mornings are clear. Pack a light rain shell for the odd shower and a fleece for the evening train back.
When is Corpus Christi in Cusco?
Corpus Christi falls 60 days after Easter, so the date moves: 27 May 2027 and 15 June 2028. In Cusco the parish saints are carried into the cathedral and the Plaza de Armas, and families eat chiri uchu. The plaza is crowded and hotels fill that week.
When is Qoyllur Rit'i in 2027?
The pilgrimage takes place in the days before Trinity Sunday, which falls on 23 May 2027. The sanctuary at Sinakara near Ocongate sits above 15,090 ft (4,600 m), with no tourist services. It is a religious event, not a tour, so go only with someone who knows the communities.
