At nine in the morning you stand on the rim of Moray, with the round Inca terraces stepping down below you in sharp, clean light and the first green coming back to the hills. By two you are in a café in Cusco, warm and dry, watching a hard shower bounce off the stones of the street outside. That is October in the Andes: do the big things early, and the rain mostly waits its turn.
Short answer: Yes. October is a shoulder month in the Andes: Cusco has highs near 71°F (21.9°C) and about 9 rain days, mostly short afternoon showers. Machu Picchu gets 6.4 in (163 mm) of rain and keeps the high-season cap until 2 November. Lima stays gray and mild. Crowds drop after September.
October is the month we suggest when someone wants dry-season light without the July lines. The rains are coming back, but slowly, and most mornings are still clear. Below you will find each region with its numbers, the dates that matter in October and a sample route built from our real packages. For the whole year side by side, read the best time to visit Peru, and for the citadel alone our guide to the best time to visit Machu Picchu.
Peru weather in October, region by region
Peru in October splits in two. The Andes are leaving the dry season while the coast still sits under its winter cloud. The table uses the SENAMHI 1991 to 2020 climate normals, Peru's official weather averages, so the numbers describe a typical October, not a forecast.
| Place | High (°F / °C) | Low (°F / °C) | Rain (in / mm) | Rain days | Crowds | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cusco and the Sacred Valley | 71 / 21.9 | 42 / 5.4 | 1.7 / 44 | about 9 | Medium, busy on long weekends | Valley tours in the morning, museums after lunch |
| Machu Picchu | 73 / 22.8 | 53 / 11.5 | 6.4 / 163 | No official count | High-season cap, 5,600 a day | Morning entry, Inca Trail open |
| Lake Titicaca (Puno) | 63 / 17.2 | 39 / 3.8 | 1.7 / 44 | No official count | Medium | Uros and Taquile on calm mornings |
| Lima | 67 / 19.4 | 60 / 15.4 | under 0.1 / 0.5 | about 1 (drizzle) | Busy on procession days | Food and museums, Lord of Miracles |
| Ica and Huacachina | 85 / 29.2 | 54 / 12.1 | under 0.1 / 0 | almost none | Medium | Dunes and sandboarding in sun |
Cusco and the Sacred Valley in October
Cusco in October averages a high of 71°F (21.9°C) and a low of 42°F (5.4°C), with 1.7 in (44 mm) of rain over about 9 wet days. That is ten times the rain of July, but it usually comes as a hard shower after lunch rather than a gray day. The mornings are the best of the year for photos: clear air, green starting to show on the hills, and no frost on the plants in the hotel courtyard.
The mistake people make in October is saving the long outdoor day for the afternoon. Do the Sacred Valley, Moray and the Maras salt ponds in the morning, and keep the afternoon for museums or the Qorikancha. Rainbow Mountain still works in October, with an early start and a rain shell in the pack.
Machu Picchu in October
Machu Picchu in October has highs of 73°F (22.8°C), nights of 53°F (11.5°C) and 6.4 in (163 mm) of rain, double September. The citadel is open every day from 6:00 a.m. with hourly entry slots to 3:00 p.m., and the high-season limit of 5,600 visitors a day stays in force until 2 November (as of the 2026 calendar, Ministerio de Cultura). On the ground the paths feel calmer than in July and August, because the North American and European summer holidays are over.
Book the entry ticket and the train about a month ahead for October. Morning slots and Huayna Picchu go first. Our Machu Picchu tickets guide explains the circuits and how to pick an hour that matches your train.
The Inca Trail in October
The Classic Inca Trail is open in October, and it is one of our favorite months for it. Most nights the campsites stay dry, the cloud forest on day 3 is green and dripping, and there is less frost on the tents at Pacaymayo than in July. Permits are capped and sold only through licensed operators, so read our Inca Trail permits guide before you fix dates. The Salkantay and Lares treks run too, with the first wet afternoons on the way down.
Lake Titicaca in October
Puno, at about 12,560 ft (3,830 m), averages a high of 63°F (17.2°C) and a low of 39°F (3.8°C) in October, with 1.7 in (44 mm) of rain. The worst of the winter cold is over, and in the morning the lake is usually calm and deep blue. The boat to the Uros islands stays cold until about 9 a.m., so pack a warm hat and gloves next to the sunscreen.
Lima and the coast in October
Lima in October is mild and gray, with highs of 67°F (19.4°C), lows of 60°F (15.4°C) and almost no rain. The low cloud, called garúa when it turns to drizzle, starts to break up late in the month. Ica and the Huacachina dunes are sunny and warm at 85°F (29.2°C) by day. If you want sun on the coast in October, go to the desert.
Festivals and holidays in October
October is the purple month in Lima. The rest of the country has one national holiday and no festival that changes travel plans.
Señor de los Milagros, Lima
The Lord of Miracles is the largest Catholic procession in Peru. Brotherhoods in purple robes carry the image from the Las Nazarenas sanctuary through central Lima on five days, with incense in the air and thousands walking slowly behind. For the current year the processions run on 3, 18, 19 and 28 October and 1 November (as of September 2026, El Peruano). Streets in the historic center close for hours on those days, and bakeries sell turrón de Doña Pepa, the anise nougat made for the season.
Battle of Angamos, 8 October
8 October is a national holiday. Banks and government offices close, and Peruvian families travel on long weekends, so domestic flights and Sacred Valley hotels fill faster when the date touches a weekend.
Crowds and prices in October
October is quieter than the June to September peak, even though Machu Picchu keeps the high-season cap. Hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes have more choice, and train seats are easier to find two to four weeks out. What does not drop is the price of the Machu Picchu ticket and the train, which the operators fix. If your dates can move, the second half of October is the calmer half.
What to pack for Peru in October
- A real rain shell, since afternoon showers return in Cusco and Machu Picchu.
- A fleece or light down jacket for Cusco nights near 42°F (5.4°C) and the cold Titicaca mornings.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the strong Andean sun.
- Walking shoes that dry overnight.
- Insect repellent for Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes.

A 7 to 10 day Peru itinerary for October
For a first trip in October, we like 10 days from Lima at an easier pace. You start in Lima and the desert while the coast is still mild, fly to Cusco on day 4, sleep in Aguas Calientes and see Machu Picchu on day 6, then spend the last days on Rainbow Mountain, the South Valley and Humantay Lake while the trails are still mostly dry. If Lake Titicaca matters more than the hikes, Lima, Cusco and Lake Titicaca in 8 days ends with two nights by the lake. Hikers can swap the train for the Classic Inca Trail if permits allow.

Questions people ask
Is October a good time to visit Peru?
Yes. October gives you most of the dry-season weather with fewer people. Cusco averages 71°F (21.9°C) by day and about 9 rain days, mostly afternoon showers. Machu Picchu is open daily and less crowded than in July. Lima is still gray, while Ica is sunny. Pack a rain shell and do the outdoor visits in the morning.
Does it rain at Machu Picchu in October?
Yes, more than in the dry months. The SENAMHI normals give Machu Picchu 6.4 in (163 mm) of rain in October, against 3.0 in (76 mm) in September. Most of it falls in the afternoon. Book a morning entry slot, carry a rain shell and leave the umbrella at the hotel, because umbrellas are banned inside the site.
Is the Inca Trail open in October?
Yes. The Classic Inca Trail and the Short Inca Trail run all year except February, when the trail network closes for maintenance. October brings cool nights, fewer frosts than July and some afternoon rain. Permits are limited and sold only through licensed operators, so book as early as your dates allow.
What is the weather like in Cusco in October?
Mild days and cool nights. SENAMHI normals for the Cusco valley give a high of 71°F (21.9°C), a low of 42°F (5.4°C) and 1.7 in (44 mm) of rain. Mornings are usually clear and the showers come after lunch. Dress in layers: a T-shirt at noon, a fleece at night.

The Señor de los Milagros leaves the Las Nazarenas sanctuary in central Lima on five days. For the current year the dates are 3, 18, 19 and 28 October and 1 November (as of September 2026, El Peruano). Expect closed streets and huge, quiet crowds dressed in purple. The dates shift a little each year.
Is October rainy season in Peru?
In the Andes, October is the start of it, not the peak. Rain in Cusco rises from about 4 wet days in September to about 9 in October, still far below the 17 to 20 of December and January. The coast stays dry and the Amazon gets wetter. Most travelers lose an afternoon or two at most.
