Is Rainbow Mountain Worth It? An Honest Answer from Cusco
Yes, if you have slept two nights in Cusco, can walk uphill for about 1 hour 45 minutes to 5,036 m (16,522 ft), and go between April and October. No, if it falls on your first or second day at altitude, the forecast shows clouds, or you have a heart or lung condition your doctor has not cleared.

In this guide
The van stops outside your Cusco hotel at 4:00 a.m., and the city is dark and silent except for a dog barking somewhere up the hill. Hours later you are on the last switchbacks under Vinicunca, counting ten steps, then stopping, then ten more, with your breath loud in your ears. At the top the wind hits your face, and across the valley the glaciers of Ausangate catch the morning sun.
Short answer: Yes, if you have slept two nights in Cusco, can walk uphill for about 1 hour 45 minutes to 5,036 m (16,522 ft), and go between April and October. No, if it falls on your first or second day at altitude, the forecast shows clouds, or you have a heart or lung condition your doctor has not cleared.
We run Rainbow Mountain from Cusco almost every day of the dry season, and we have watched two kinds of traveler come back. Some call it the best day of the trip. Others spent four hours on a cold ridge inside a cloud and wonder why they paid. The mountain was the same for both. The conditions were not. This page helps you make the call, and leaves the guidebook part to other pages. If you have already decided to go and want to pick between the three striped mountains, read which rainbow mountain to hike.
What the day really costs
Rainbow Mountain costs you one full day, a 4:00 a.m. pickup and about 1 hour 45 minutes of uphill walking at the highest altitude of most Peru trips. The viewpoint of Vinicunca stands at 5,036 m (16,522 ft), the figure in Peru's official inventory of tourism resources (MINCETUR), and the walk from the Chillihuani side is about 3 km (1.9 mi). You are back in Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., tired and sunburned if you skipped the sunscreen.
| Factor | Detail | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Time | Full day: pickup 4:00 a.m., back 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. | A whole day, plan nothing else |
| Walking | About 3 km (1.9 mi) up, 1 hour 45 minutes per MINCETUR, about 1 hour down | Moderate distance, hard because of altitude |
| Altitude | Viewpoint 5,036 m (16,522 ft) | Only after two nights in Cusco |
| Price | US$137 per person with guide, breakfast and lunch. Horse US$24 (S/80) per stretch | Good value for a full guided day |
| Best months | April to October, dry season per MINCETUR | Skip November to March if you can |
| Crowds | Busy viewpoint on dry-season mornings | Palccoyo or Pallay Punchu if crowds bother you |
| Payoff | Striped ridge with the Ausangate glaciers behind | Worth it on a clear day with realistic expectations |
In money it costs less than people expect. Our Rainbow Mountain day tour costs US$137 per person with transport, the community entrance, a bilingual guide, breakfast and lunch. Add a horse for the climb if you want one, US$24 (S/80) per stretch paid in cash on the day (agency price as of October 2026), and tips for the guide and driver. The table weighs what you put in against what you get back.
When Rainbow Mountain is worth the climb
It is worth it when three things line up: your body, the sky and your expectations.
Your body is ready
Do it after at least two nights in Cusco, at 3,399 m (11,152 ft), and better after Machu Picchu. By day four or five of a Cusco stay, most people who walk three miles at home without trouble make it to the top at a slow pace, stopping every few steps on the last switchbacks. Put the same people on the trail on day two and many turn back, carry a headache into the night, or reach the top too sick to enjoy it. The CDC Yellow Book places the start of altitude illness risk at sleeping altitudes of 2,450 m (8,000 ft). You will not sleep at 5,036 m, but you will be climbing there.
The sky is clear
The colors are mineral layers, and they need sun and dry ground to show. MINCETUR's inventory recommends the dry season from April to October. From November to March, clouds sit on the ridge on many mornings, and fresh snow can bury the stripes completely. If your only free day is in February, the colors are a coin toss.
You expect the real thing
Many photos online are edited until the stripes glow. On a clear morning the real ridge is striking, with red, ochre, green and white bands and the glaciers of Ausangate across the valley, but the colors are earthier than your phone feed promised. People who come for the photo go home disappointed. People who come for a mountain do not.
When to skip Vinicunca
Skip Rainbow Mountain if it would fall in your first 48 hours at altitude, if the forecast shows rain or snow, or if you have a heart or lung condition. For the last one, the CDC advises seeing a physician who knows altitude medicine before high-altitude travel. Bring your itinerary and tell them the viewpoint is above 5,000 m. This page is not medical advice. Our guides will turn back with anyone who feels unwell, and that is the right call even after a 4:00 a.m. start.
Skip it too if you hate crowds. The main viewpoint is busy on dry-season mornings, and there is a line for the photo spot. Going early helps a little. Choosing another mountain helps more.
Better alternatives for some travelers
If Vinicunca does not fit, two other striped mountains do. Palccoyo, at about 4,900 m (16,080 ft), gives similar colors on a near-flat ridge with about 45 minutes of easy walking each way, at US$137. It is our pick for travelers over 65, families with children, and anyone with only one day in Cusco before the hike. Pallay Punchu, at about 4,700 m (15,420 ft), is a sharp striped ridge above a lake with very few people, at US$147. The price you pay for that quiet is the longest drive of the three.
If what you want is a high Andean day with a big view, and the colors are optional, Humantay Lake at 4,200 m (13,780 ft) is lower and, in our opinion, the better first high hike.
How to fit it into your trip
Put Rainbow Mountain at the end of your Cusco days, after Machu Picchu. That is the order our 5-day Machu Picchu and Cusco package with Rainbow Mountain, from US$914, uses, with the mountain on day 4. Pack a warm jacket, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a liter of water. The ridge is below freezing at dawn and in strong sun by ten, and you will use every layer. Questions people ask
Is Rainbow Mountain worth it for most travelers?
Yes, for acclimatized travelers on a clear day between April and October who can walk uphill for about 1 hour 45 minutes at 5,036 m. It is not worth it in your first 48 hours at altitude, in cloud or snow, or if a doctor has not cleared a heart or lung condition. In those cases Palccoyo, a near-flat striped ridge, is the better choice.
Is Rainbow Mountain overrated?
Only if you expect the edited photos. The real colors are earthier, and the main viewpoint is crowded on dry-season mornings. On a clear day, though, the ridge with Ausangate's glaciers behind it is one of the big views of the Cusco region, in our opinion. Lower your expectations on color and raise them on scenery.
How hard is the Rainbow Mountain hike?
The distance is short, about 3 km (1.9 mi) from the trailhead, and MINCETUR gives 1 hour 45 minutes up. The altitude is what makes it hard: the viewpoint is at 5,036 m (16,522 ft). Most acclimatized walkers get there at a slow pace, stopping often on the last switchbacks. Horses can carry you most of the way, and the final steep section is on foot.
When is the best time to see Rainbow Mountain?
April to October, the dry season recommended in Peru's official tourism inventory. Mornings are clear more often, and the stripes show on dry ground. From November to March, clouds often cover the ridge and snow can hide the colors. In any month, the morning gives you the best light and the calmest wind.
Is Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake better?
For a first high hike, Humantay Lake. It is lower at 4,200 m, the climb takes about 1.5 hours, and the turquoise lake under the glacier delivers in most weather. Rainbow Mountain is higher and needs a clear sky. With two free days after Machu Picchu, do Humantay first and Rainbow Mountain second.
Can you do Rainbow Mountain on your first day in Cusco?
We advise against it. Cusco sits at 3,399 m and the viewpoint at 5,036 m, so a first-day climb puts you 1,600 m above a city your body has not adjusted to yet. Spend at least two nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first. If you have no other day, book Palccoyo, which has almost no climbing.
