Vinicunca, Palccoyo or Pallay Punchu: Which One to Hike?
Vinicunca is the famous one and worth the climb if you have slept two nights in Cusco and can walk uphill for 90 minutes at 16,000 ft. Palccoyo gives the same colors on a near-flat ridge for people who are short on time or breath. Pallay Punchu is the jagged ridge with almost nobody on it, at the cost of the longest drive.

In this guide
Short answer: Vinicunca is the rainbow mountain in the photos, and it is worth the day if you have slept at least two nights in Cusco and can walk uphill for about 90 minutes at 16,000 ft. If you landed yesterday, are traveling with children or parents, or the forecast says rain, book Palccoyo: the same stripes on a near-flat ridge. Pallay Punchu is for people who have done Vinicunca already, or who want a sharp striped ridge above a lake with almost nobody else on it, and who accept the longest drive of the three.
Three striped mountains, one decision
All three sit south of Cusco in the Canchis and Quispicanchi provinces, along the highway toward Puno, and all three show the same thing: tilted layers of sedimentary rock colored by iron, quartz, sulfur and magnesium minerals. What changes is how high you walk, how far you drive, and how many other people stand at the viewpoint with you. We run day tours to all three from Cusco, each with a guide, breakfast and lunch, so we have no reason to push one over the others. The honest ranking depends on your legs, your lungs and your calendar.
Vinicunca is the original Rainbow Mountain. The viewpoint stands at 16,522 ft (5,036 m), the figure recorded in Peru's official inventory of tourism resources, and you earn it on foot. Palccoyo is a line of three striped hills at about 16,080 ft (4,900 m) in the Checacupe district, reached by a ridge path with little gain. Pallay Punchu is a serrated ridge in the Layo district at about 15,420 ft (4,700 m), above Lake Langui Layo, and still outside the big tour circuits.
How the three compare
The table below puts the three day trips side by side with the numbers from our own itineraries and the official records. Read the walking row first, then the altitude, then the pickup time. Those three lines decide most trips.

|---|---|---|---|
| Top altitude, feet and meters | 16,522 / 5,036 | about 16,080 / 4,900 | about 15,420 / 4,700 |
| Walking | 1.9 mi (3 km) uphill, about 1 h 45 min up and 1 h down | about 45 minutes each way, near flat | 45 to 60 minutes each way, short steady climb |
| Effort | Moderate, hard at the top | Easy to moderate | Moderate |
| Pickup and return | 4:00 a.m., back 4 to 5 p.m. | 4:00 a.m., back 4 to 5 p.m. | 3:00 a.m., back 5 to 6 p.m. |

Vinicunca: the famous peak
Vinicunca earns the fame. On a clear morning the whole ridge glows red, mustard, green and white, with Ausangate's glaciers across the valley, and the view from the top is bigger than any photo suggests. The cost is the walk. From the Llaqto trailhead above the Chillihuani community, the path climbs about 1.9 mi (3 km) and roughly 1,400 ft (430 m) to the viewpoint. The official inventory gives 1 hour 45 minutes on foot. Most of our guests take between 90 minutes and two hours, with the last 20 minutes on steep switchbacks where everyone stops every few steps.
The day starts with a pickup in Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. and about two and a half hours on the paved highway to Cusipata for breakfast, then an hour on a dirt road to the trailhead. You walk from about 8 a.m., spend 30 to 40 minutes at the top, and are back in Cusco between 4 and 5 p.m. Families from the community rent horses at the trailhead for the way up, paid in cash in soles to the owner who walks beside you. On our tour the horse costs US$24 (S/80) per stretch (agency price, as of October 2026). The last steep section is on foot for everyone, horse or not.
Book Vinicunca if you have been in Cusco two nights or more, you walk uphill at home without trouble, and you are going between April and October, when the dry season keeps the stripes uncovered. Skip it, or switch to Palccoyo, if you arrived in the last 48 hours, if anyone in your group has heart or lung disease, or if you are traveling from December to March, when rain and fresh snow often hide the colors. Our Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca day hike runs the Cusipata route for US$137 per person with breakfast and lunch. Read Rainbow Mountain altitude and weather before you decide, because the altitude is the whole story.
Palccoyo: the gentle ridge
Palccoyo gives you the colors without the climb. Instead of one striped peak you walk a ridge past three striped hills, with a field of eroded rock pinnacles that locals call the stone forest at the far end. The path stays close to 16,080 ft (4,900 m) the whole way, so there is no big ascent, and our itinerary allows about 45 minutes of easy walking each way with time for photos. People who would stop every ten steps on Vinicunca walk Palccoyo at a normal pace, breathing hard only on the few short rises.
The trade-off is the view. Palccoyo's stripes are softer and the hills are lower and rounder than Vinicunca, so the photos are pretty rather than dramatic. There is also a different crowd: fewer people than Vinicunca by a wide margin, though the small parking area fills on dry-season weekends. The timetable matches Vinicunca almost exactly, pickup at 4:00 a.m., breakfast in a village on the way, the ridge by mid-morning, lunch on the road back and Cusco between 4 and 5 p.m.
Book Palccoyo if you have one free day and arrived in Cusco yesterday, if you are over 65 or bringing children, if anyone in the group gets short of breath on stairs, or if you are traveling in the rainy months and want a result whatever the sky does. Our Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain day hike costs US$137 per person, the same as Vinicunca, with breakfast and an Andean lunch.
Pallay Punchu: the quiet ridge
Pallay Punchu looks like no other mountain near Cusco. The ridge is a row of sharp, tilted blades striped in red, purple and green, standing above the blue water of Lake Langui Layo. The name means something close to adorned poncho in Quechua, after the way the stripes run like the pattern of a woven garment, according to the Layo district council. It sits at about 15,420 ft (4,700 m), lower than the other two, and the walk from the road to the viewpoint takes 45 minutes to an hour each way with a steady but short climb.
The price of the quiet is the road. Layo is beyond Sicuani, so our pickup is at 3:00 a.m., breakfast is in a town on the way, you reach the lake around 8 a.m., and you are back in Cusco between 5 and 6 p.m. That is a long day in a van for about two hours on your feet. Most people share the viewpoint with their own group and a few local families, which is rare in the Cusco region in the dry season.
Book Pallay Punchu if you have done Vinicunca on an earlier trip, if you are a photographer who wants a different shape, or if your idea of a good day out is not sharing it. Skip it if you are tight on days or sensitive to long drives, since the van time is the longest of the three. Our Pallay Punchu one day trek costs US$147 per person with breakfast and lunch.
Which is easiest, and which is worth the trip
Easiest is Palccoyo, with no real climb, then Pallay Punchu, with a short one, then Vinicunca, with the steep final stretch at the highest altitude of the three. Most worth it, if you can do the climb, is Vinicunca, because the ridge and the glacier view are in a different league. If you cannot do the climb, Palccoyo is still worth the day, and nobody who goes there with the right expectations comes back disappointed. Pallay Punchu is worth it for the right person and a waste of a day for someone who wanted the postcard.
One more rule that applies to all three: do this after Machu Picchu, not before. Machu Picchu is lower than Cusco. These ridges are a mile higher than the city, so put them at the end of your Cusco days, when your body has had the most time to adjust, and read our Cusco altitude guide if you have never slept above 8,000 ft. Every trip that includes one of these hikes is listed on the Rainbow Mountain destination page, and the day trips from Cusco hub shows them next to the easier valley days.

Questions people ask
Is Rainbow Mountain worth the climb?
Yes, if you have slept two nights in Cusco, can walk uphill for about 90 minutes at 16,000 ft, and go in the dry season between April and October. The ridge and the view of Ausangate are far better in person than in photos. If any of those three conditions fails, Palccoyo gives you the colors with far less risk of a miserable day.
Vinicunca, Palccoyo or Pallay Punchu: which one is best?
Our opinion, having guided all three: Vinicunca for the view, Palccoyo for ease, Pallay Punchu for solitude. Vinicunca is the dramatic one and the hardest. Palccoyo is near flat at about 4,900 m and suits recent arrivals and families. Pallay Punchu is a jagged ridge above a lake with the fewest visitors and the longest drive, with a 3:00 a.m. pickup.
Which rainbow mountain is the easiest?
Palccoyo. The path follows a ridge at about 16,080 ft (4,900 m) with almost no gain, about 45 minutes each way at an easy pace. Pallay Punchu comes next, with a short climb of 45 to 60 minutes. Vinicunca is the hardest: 1.9 mi (3 km) uphill with steep switchbacks at the end, at the highest altitude of the three.
What is the difference between Palccoyo and Vinicunca?
Vinicunca is one striped peak with a viewpoint at 16,522 ft (5,036 m) that you reach after about 1 hour 45 minutes uphill, and it is crowded by mid-morning in the dry season. Palccoyo is three striped hills on a ridge at about 4,900 m, walked in 45 minutes with little climbing, with softer colors and far fewer people. Both cost US$137 on our day tours.
Can you do Rainbow Mountain and Palccoyo in one trip?
Not with us, and we would not recommend it. Each is a full day from Cusco with a 4:00 a.m. pickup and a return between 4 and 5 p.m., in different valleys off the same highway. Doing both means two very early mornings. If you only have one day, pick by your fitness and the weather, not by trying to fit both in.
How many days in Cusco do I need before Rainbow Mountain?
Two nights at least for Vinicunca, and we prefer three with the Machu Picchu days in between, since Machu Picchu is lower than Cusco. The CDC puts unacclimatized travelers at risk once they sleep above 8,000 ft (2,450 m), and all three ridges are more than 4,000 ft higher than Cusco. Palccoyo is the exception that works after one night, taken slowly.
Which rainbow mountain is better in the rainy season?
Palccoyo. From December to March the ridges get afternoon rain, hail and fresh snow, and Vinicunca's stripes are often hidden under white or mud. Palccoyo keeps you outside for less time, and the short walk means a clear window of an hour is enough. Whichever you pick, take the earliest departure, because the weather builds after midday.
